September 12, 2006 Red Sox 9, Orioles 7
| This game should never have been a save for Papelbon. Kason Gabbard pitches spectacular, only allowing 2 hits and no runs in 7 innings, while Orioles starter Daniel Cabrera sucks wind, with 8 walks and 2 run-scoring wild pitches for an 8-0 Sox lead. With an 8 run lead and the 8th inning coming up, it sems like a good time to let some guys pitch who don't get much action. The move almost backfires, as the Orioles get 6 runs in the 8th off Craig Hansen and Mike Burns, but Timlin and Paps come in and pretty much squelch the rally. With 18 games left, the Sox sit 13 back in the division and 12 back in the wild card. Playoff hopes are slim, but still there. Although, it will pretty much take a miracle. |
