July 17, 2006 Royals 4, Red Sox 2

The Red Sox just cannot seem to string together consecutive victories. Their streak of alternating wins and losses has now reached 12 straight games, as Tim Wakefield loses his 8th straight start. The Sox did make some noise in the 9th, as they did score a run and had the bases loaded with two outs, but Jason Varitek popped out to end the game. It took three Royal pitchers to get through the 9th.

July 16, 2006 Giants 5, Phillies 4

You wouldn't know it, but this game was a tight 1-0 Giants lead in a pitchers duel between Brett Myers and Matt Cain for the first 6 1/2 innings. After Myers was pinch-hit for in the top of the 7th, the Giants scored 3 runs off Aaron Fultz in the bottom of the 7th for a 4-0 lead.

The Phillies came right back, tying the game with 4 runs in the top of the 8th. However, the Giants would have runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the 9th and Barry Bonds due up. I intentionally walk Bonds to load the bases, since the only runner that mattered was the runner on third. Ray Durham then hits a single to win the game for the Giants.

A bizzare start for Cory Lidle, as he strikes out 10 but also allows 5 runs, 7 hits, 3 walks and 2 wild pitches in 6 2/3. The offense gives him plenty of run support though, with Jimmy Rollins hitting a double and a homer, Bobby Abreu 3 for 5, and the top of the batting order on its game today with the first 5 batters going 10 for 22!

Jimmy Rollins had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at SBC Park where the Philadelphia
Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants by the score of 4 to 3.

Philadelphia did all of it's offensive work in the 2nd inning when they
tallied 4 runs on 2 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. San
Francisco had 12 hits in the game while Philadelphia had 8, but Philadelphia
had the more timely hits.

Jon Lieber(6-3) went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Lieber got
help from Tom Gordon who was credited with his 16th save. Matt Morris(3-7)
absorbed the loss.

Philadelphia continued their winnings ways improving their record to a
division leading 51-37. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. With this
loss, San Francisco has a 7-3 record of late, 44-46 overall.

July 14, 2006 Red Sox 3, A's 1

Good pitchers duel betwen Barry Zito and Josh Beckett, with Beckett the victor. Zito's 5 walks allowed and 7 hits were the difference. Seanez pitched the 8th, and Papelbon with a spotless 9th for save number 21. Manny hit a homer for the Sox.

I didn't play the all-star game yet, but the game is all set up. I just didn't feel like playing it yet - just continue with the season for now. I sent you an email to your toospooky address with some assorted tidbits about the upcoming allstar game.

Sox defeated the Oakland Athletics by the score of 3 to 1 at Fenway
Park.

Oakland was unable to recover after Boston went ahead in the bottom of the 5th
inning scoring a single run using 3 hits. Oakland was set down quietly in
the 9th.

The win was credited to Josh Beckett(7-6) who went 7 innings allowing 1 run.
Jonathan Papelbon got the save, his 21st. Barry Zito(7-6) was given the
loss.

July 9, 2006 Phillies 8, Pirates 4

The Phillies only scored in two separate innings, but each one was four runs. They got 4 in the 2nd inning, with pitcher Cole Hamels helping his own cause with a 2-run double. However, Nate McLouth's 3-run shot in the 7th would tie the game, 4-4, and deny Hamels of his chance to go to 8-0 for the year. The Phils strike right back in the bottom of the 7th with 4 runs, and coast from there. 12 doubles in the game between the two teams.

50-37 at the All-Star break, first place, 3 games ahead of the Mets and Braves.

overall, while Pittsburgh had 10.

runs. The losing pitcher was Matt Capps(4-5) in relief. He pitched 1 inning

July 9, 2006 Red Sox 10, White Sox 3

The Sox storm out of the gate with a 3-run first inning and a 4-run fourth, both capped by David Ortiz homers. Papi's 2-run shot in the first and his 3-run blast in the fourth give him 41 homers and 85 RBI for the season as we go to the all-star break. Everybody got into the action today, with every starter geeting at least one hit. Curt Schilling has an effective start for his team leading 10th win of the year, almost 1/4 of the Sox win total for the season!

43-43 at the break, 4 games behind the first place Yankees and Blue Jays. Time to step things up a notch in the second half!!

inning. For the game Boston out-hit Chicago (AL) 15 to 11.

July 8, 2006 Phillies 4, Pirates 3

This game was all Phillies - until the 8th inning. Cory Lidle was pitching brilliantly, only allowing 2 hits through 7 innnings. When the Pirates got a single, walk and hit batter to load the bases in the 8th, I was tempted to take Lidle out. But, the bullpen has been overworked lately, Lidle's pitch count was fairly low, and the pitchers spot was due up in the bottom of the 8th anyway so I kept Lidle in. Jimmy Rollins makes an error to score a run, and a botched double play attempt scored another run to make the score 3-2.

Tom Gordon comes in for the save in the 9th, retires the first two batters, but then Jose Castillo hits a homerun to tie the game at 3. Then, in the bottom of the 9th, leadoff batter Ryan Howard blasts one downtown for the walk-off homerun to give the Phillies the win after all!! Gordon gets a blown save, but ends up with the win.

Cory Lidle went 8 strong innings as the Philadelphia Phillies won at Citizen's
Bank Park in dramatic fashion over the Pittsburgh Pirates, the final score, 4
to 3.

Philadelphia scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Ryan
Howard hit a bases-empty home run (his 24th of the season) resulting in an
exciting win for Philadelphia and a raucous post-game celebration by the home
town fans. Philadelphia ended up with 13 hits for the game while Pittsburgh
had 4.

The victory went to Tom Gordon(2-2) who went 1 inning, allowing 1 run. Salomon
Torres(8-5) was hit with the loss in relief. He gave up 1 hit and no walks
in 1/3 of an inning.

July 8, 2006 White Sox 13, Red Sox 5

Not one of Josh Beckett's better starts, as he can't get out of the first inning while allowing 6 runs in the 13-5 shellacking.

Podsednik led off with a double, Iguchi blasted a 2-run homer, a Thome double, Konerko single, and Dye with a double make the score 3-0 before even getting an out. I had a feeling right there that it wasn't going to be Beckett's game, but I figured it is way too early to take him out. Beckett settled down and got Pierzynski to ground out and Crede to fly out for two outs. Then, Mirabelli makes a passed ball to score a run, and Mackowiak doubles home another to make it 5-0. Beckett then walks three straight (Cintron, Podsednik and Iguchi) to score another run to make it 6-0. Now it is painfully obvious he can't get the last out, and he gets the hook. Tavarez comes in and gets Thome to fly out to end the inning.

The lead reached 9-0 before the Sox finally started scoring, scoring single runs in the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th innings but it was way too late. Kevin Youkilis (back in the leadoff spot again due to Crisp's failure at the top and Youk's continued hot hitting) led the attack with a 3 for 5 day, and Ortiz adds homerun number 39 to his 2 for 4 day.

Designated hitter Jim Thome homered and had 3 RBI at US Cellular Field where
the Chicago (AL) White Sox beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 13 to
5.

Thome had a good day at the plate. He doubled in the 1st inning, laced a
base-knock plating two runs in the 3rd inning and lofted a solo-blast
'downtown' (his 27th of the season) in the 8th inning. Due to a poorly
pitched ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was still not enough for
Boston to come away with the victory.

The winning pitcher was Freddy Garcia(11-3) who allowed 3 runs in 5 innings.
Josh Beckett(6-6) took the loss. He allowed 6 runs and 6 hits in 2/3 of an
inning.

July 7, 2006 Phillies 4, Pirates 3

The Phillies get back on the winning track, as Chase Utley has a 4 for 4 day with 2 homeruns. The top of the 9th proved interesting, as with one out Freddy Sanchez singled but was picked off first by Tom Gordon for the second out. The next batter Bautista reached on an error, and he was also promptly picked off by Gordon for out number three to end the game. First time I can remember two pickoffs with two consecutive batters.

Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 4 to 3 at Citizen's
Bank Park.

Utley made sure the Philadelphia fans enjoyed themselves. He delivered a solo
blast in the 1st inning, ripped a base-knock in the 3rd inning, smashed a
two-run homer (his 15th of the season) in the 5th inning and lined a single
in the 7th inning. Pittsburgh had a chance to come back in the 9th but they
came up short.

Jon Lieber(5-3) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Tom Gordon earned
the save, his 15th. Ian Snell(4-6) suffered the loss.

Jim Tracy was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our guys
had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one. That
is what really ticks me off!'

lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 8th inning and blasted a solo shot (his
9th of the season) in the 9th inning. San Diego bats were hot in the 8th
inning with 9 runs on 6 hits. San Diego had 21 hits for the game and
Philadelphia had 4.

Tim Wakefield gets lambasted by the Rays, allowing 8 runs on 8 hits (4 of those homeruns) in only 2 1/3 innings, dropping his record to 5-10 for the season. Julian Tavarez stopped the bleeding however, with 3 2/3 innings of one hit, shutout relief immediately after relieving Wake.

All the Sox scoring came on homeruns, with 2 for Big Papi and Mike Lowell busting out of a 3 for 33 slump with a homerun.

Ty Wigginton smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays
defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 10 to 3 at Tropicana
Field.

Wigginton made sure the Tampa Bay fans enjoyed themselves. He lofted a
solo-blast 'downtown' in the 2nd inning and cleared the fences for a two-run
home run (his 19th of the season) in the 8th inning. Tampa Bay had 13 hits
for the night while Boston had 6.

James Shields(5-3) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 5 and 2/3
innings. Tim Wakefield(5-10) was tagged with the loss. He served up 4 gopher
balls in 2 and 1/3 innings.

July 5, 2006 Padres 11, Phillies 2

The tables get turned on the Phils today, as they allow 10 or more runs for only the second time this season. Khail Greene hits 2 homers, Mike Cameron falls a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle, and 8 solid innings for Jake Peavy are enough for the Pads victory. The only Phillie highlight is a David Dellucci pinch-hit homerun in the 7th inning.

Despite the fact that 3 Phillie pitchers struck out 13 Padres, they also allowed 13 hits and 11 runs.
