August 29, 2006 Red Sox 5, A's 4
| The Sox get back on the winning track by turning 5 double plays in a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the AL West leading A's. Josh Beckett gets his first win in over a month, as he has been really struggling lately. In his previous 6 starts (not including this game), Beckett had gone 0-5 with an 11.32 ERA. It didn't look good at first when Milton Bradley and Frank Thomas hit back-to-back homers in the first inning and the A's got another run in the second for the 3-0 lead, but the Sox would do all their scoring by sending 11 men to the plate for a 5-run 5th inning. After Hinske grounded out for out number one, Lowell and Pena hit back to back doubles for the Sox first run. Doug Mirabelli cracks a 2-run homerun to tie the game at 3. Pedroia hits a single, then Cora and Loretta hit back to back singles to score Pedroia for the 4-3 Sox lead. That would do it for A's starter Kirk Saarloos, as Jay Witasick enters. He only faces two batters, walking Youkilis to load the bases and Hinske to force in the 5th run of the inning. Chad Gaudin comes in and gets Lowell to fly out to end the inning. The A's get a run in the 7th via a Mark Ellis RBI single, and that would end the scoring. Papelbon allows 2 straight walks in the 9th after getting the first out, but the A's hit into their 5th double play of the game to end it. |

Catcher Doug Mirabelli blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox
defeated the Oakland Athletics by the score of 5 to 4 at McAfee
Coliseum.
Boston did all the necessary damage in the 5th inning as they scored 5 runs on
6 base hits. The big moment was provided by Mirabelli who silenced the crowd
when he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 7th of the season).
Boston managed 9 in their victory.
Josh Beckett(9-11) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 4 runs. Beckett got help from Jonathan Papelbon who was credited
with his 30th save. Kirk Saarloos(7-5) absorbed the loss. He was knocked
around, surrendering 5 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.
