August 26, 2006 Mets 5, Phillies 3

Even with a leadoff home by current MVP leading candidate Jimmy Rollins, the Phils blow that lead immediately as the Mets get 2 in their half of the first, and never get the lead back. The Phillies had a golden opportunity to get back in the game in the 8th, but failed.

With the Mets leading 5-2, David Dellucci singles and Rollins singles and steals second for runners on second and third with no outs. Here comes Billy Wagner. Now when he was on the Phillies, I loved him but now that he is on the Mets, I hate to see hime come in. Sure enough, he gets Victorino to ground out with no run scoring, and strikes out Utley and Howard to end the threat with no damage. The Phils do get to him for a run in the 9th with a Pat Burrell homer, but that is it. Wagner has saved the last 6 meetings between the Mets and Phils, all Met victories and Wagner saves. 42 saves for Wagner out of the 70 games that the Mets have won.

With the victory, the Mets are now 11-7 against the Phils on the year, guarranteed winning the head to head matchup. That could become important later on, as the Mets are the current wild card leading team and sit 5 1/2 back of the Phils in the division.

Shawn Green went deep and had 3 RBI as the New York (NL) Mets outscored the
Philadelphia Phillies 5 to 3.

New York (NL) wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning when they
tallied 2 runs on 4 hits. Philadelphia made it exciting in the 9th, but they
were unable to push the needed runs across.

Oliver Perez(2-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing
2 runs. Perez got help from Billy Wagner who earned his 42nd save. Jon
Lieber(8-6) ended up with the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 12 hits in 6
innings.

'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Charlie Manual after the game.
'We lost this game tonight because we didn't follow the instructions every
Little Leaguer hears every day.'
