August 24, 2006 Red Sox 9, Angels 8 (12)

The Sox pull out the victory in the slugfest, scoring the winning run in the top of the 12th on....a wild pitch!! A lot happened prior to that point, though.

The Angels jumped out in the first to a 2-0 lead on Vlad Guerrero's 2-run homer, but the Sox would then score 7 unanswered runs with the big blows being Papi's solo shot (number 51!) in the 3rd, and Coco Crisp's 3-run bomb in the 5th for a 7-2 Sox lead.

The Angles come right back however, scoring 5 unanswered runs of their own with a run in the 5th and 4 more in the 6th courtesy of Garrett Anderson's 2-run single and Howie Kendrick's 2-run homer to tie the game, 7-7. Doug Mirabelli, after striking out his first 3 trips to the plate, gets an RBI single in the top of the 7th to put the Sox back in front 8-7.

Papelbon can't save the game in the 9th however, as Adam Kennedy leads off with a triple and scores on a sac fly to retie the game 8-8, for only the 4th blown save for Paps on the season. The Sox would get the go-ahead and winning run in the top of the 12th when Crisp leads off with a single, is bunted to second by Loretta (who came in to pinch hit for the 0 for 5 Dustin Pedroia in the 9th), goes to 3rd on a deep flyball out by Papi, and scores on a wild pitch by Hector Carrasco. Mike Timlin goes the 11th and stays in for the 12th to get the win.

The Sox go back over the .500 mark with the win, and had better start winning real soon.

43,115 fans were treated to a fine game at Angels Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Boston Red Sox won by the
slimmest of margins, 9 to 8.

The score was knotted at 8 after nine innings. Boston came out on top in the
12th inning. Coco Crisp stroked a one-base hit. Mark Loretta stepped into
the batter's box and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. One out later, Hector
Carrasco came to the plate and let one slip out of his hand for a wild pitch
scoring the run. Boston managed 13 in their victory.

Mike Timlin(5-2) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Scot Shields(7-4)
was the loser in relief. He pitched 4 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 walk.
