September 6, 2006 Astros 5, Phillies 2 (10)

The Phillie defense saves the game in the 9th, but then blows the game in the 10th. First, the good. In a tight 1-1 game in the top of the 9th, Aubrey Huff walks and Chris Burke singles for runners on first and second with one out. Pinch-hitter Luke Scott rips a single to right, and Jeff Conine throws a missle home to nail Huff trying to score from second, No run scores, game still tied.

Now, the bad. After a groundout and with Geoff Geary on the mound, Willy Tavares singles and Eric Bruntlett doubles for runners on second and third with one out. Lance Berkman is intentionally walked to load the bases and set up the force at any base. Jason Lane hits a slow roller to Chase Utley for what should be a second-to home-to first double play. However, Utley throws it past catcher Chris Coste, and two Astros score. The scorer gives Lane a single and an error on Utley. Huff is intentionally walked to again set up the force at any base, but Chris Burke walks on his own to force in another run. Aaron Fultz comes into the game at this point, and Scott hits a sac fly for the fourth run of the inning.

The Phillies do make some noise in the bottom of the 10th, getting a run home on a Coste double, but that would be it and Houston wins to take sole possession of the NL's best record from the Phils with 22 games left.

The Houston Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in 10 innings by a score
of 5 to 2 at Citizen's Bank Park.

The score was tied at 1 after nine. Houston won it in the 10th inning. Both
teams ended up with 9 on the night.

The winning pitcher was Trever Miller(8-3) who allowed 1 run in 2 innings.
Miller was helped out by Dan Wheeler who recorded his 22nd save. The loss
was charged to Geoff Geary(7-3) in relief.

September 6, 2006 Red Sox 4, White Sox 1

The Red Sox take the last two games of the series in what is easily Kyle Snyder's best start of the season. Snyder goes 6 shutout innings, striking out 9. Javier Lopez and Keith Foulke finish up, and Foulke ends up with a save after Jermaine Dye hit a homer off Lopez to spoil the shutout in the 8th inning.

The Red Sox did all the needed damage by batting around in the 4th, scoring 4 runs. Coco Crisp was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double for out number one. Mark Loretta doubles, David Ortiz walks and Manny knocks in both of them with a double for a 2-0 lead. That did it for Jose Contreras, and Charlie Haeger comes in. Trot strikes out for the second out, then Mike Lowell is intentionally walked to set up a force anywhere but home. The move backfires on the White Sox, as Jason Varitek singles to load the bases and Eric Hinske rips a double to score two more and a 4-0 lead. Alex Cora would ground out to end the inning.

September 4, 2006 White Sox 11, Red Sox 2

The IRL late season scramble for arms is beginning to show in the replay, as the White Sox do all their damage in the 6th and 7th innings, specifically courtesy of Tadahito Iguchi. Julian Tavarez made it through the first 5 inning unscathed despite allowing 7 hits, but after a single, groundout, an RBI double (which tied the game) and a walk and over 100 pitches, was done for the day and normally reliable Manny Declarmen comes in.

Not today, though. Declamen allows a single to load the bases, gets a strikeout and then Iguchi slams a two-out grand slam to give the White Sox the lead. Iguchi wasn't done, and in the 7th rips a 2-run homer off Bryan Corey to cap a 2 homer, 6 RBI day.

The Red Sox batters did not strike out at all today, which considering the number of free swingers on the team seems surprising to me.

Second baseman Tadahito Iguchi smacked 2 homeruns at Fenway Park as the
Chicago (AL) White Sox beat the Boston Red Sox 11 to 2.

Iguchi was unconscious all evening. The Boston fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He slapped
a single in the 3rd inning, depressed the partisan hometown fans with a grand
slam home run in the 6th inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 18th of
the season) in the 7th inning. Chicago (AL) out-hit Boston for the game, 16
hits to 6.

The victory went to Jon Garland(12-8) who went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1
run. Julian Tavarez(5-3) was given the loss. 'I was in my hotel room the
other night, working on my swing and made some adjustments,' Iguchi said.
'I'm always working on it. If they are getting you out certain ways, you've
got to make changes.'

September 4, 2006 Astros 10, Phillies 2

The Phillies recent slump continues, losing their 5th out of the last 6 and allowing 10 or more runs for the 3rd time in the last 4 games. The battle of old vs. young (44 year old Roger Clemens vs. 22 year old Cole Hamels) ends up as Hamels worst start of the year and his 2nd straight loss, although he is not totally to blame.

Hamels walked Lance Berkman and Chris Lane to lead off the 4th, and Aubrey Huff grounded what looked to be a sure double play ball to third baseman Abraham Nunez. Nunez goes to first with it, and throws it over Ryan Howard's head for a 2 base error to score a run and open the floodgates. The game just fell apart from there. Pat Burrell's 2-run homer in the Phillie 4th would be the only scoring off Clemens, who goes the distance.

Also of note, the win for the Astros puts them in first in the NL Central and ties them with the Phillies for the best record in the National League.

Interesting side note: When Roger Clemens began his career with the Red Sox in 1984, his opponent today Cole Hamels was 4 months old! Hell, Clemens is old enough to be his father!

The Braves jump right out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first to hand Jamie Moyer his first Phillie loss and take game two in the second of back to back doubleheaders. Ex-teammate Todd Pratt had the big blow with a 3-run homer. Ryan Madson certainly did his job, with 4 innings of one-hit relief, but the Phils couldn't score anymore than 3 runs off Tim Hudson. Hudson gets the complete game, with 138 pitches!

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Shane Victorino robbed Andruw Jones of an extra base hit.

Tim Hudson was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 8 to 3 at
Citizen's Bank Park.

Atlanta jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring 6 runners on
6 hits. That was all the offense they were to need. Both teams ended up
with 10 on the afternoon.

Hudson(13-7) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Jamie
Moyer(10-13) was given the loss. He was knocked around by Atlanta, allowing
7 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings.

September 3, 2006 Phillies 3, Braves 1

After yesterday's relief corps exhausting doubleheader, Brett Myers does his job in game 1 of another doubleheader. Myers almost goes the distance, only allowing 4 hits while striking out 12, but after walking Chipper Jones with one out in the 9th and with Andruw Jones coming to the plate Arthur Rhodes comes in. Jones does get a single, but Brian McCann grounds into a double play to end the game.

All scoring today on homers, with Edgar Renteria's solo shot in the first, a 2-run dinger by Jose Hernandez in the 5th for the 2-1 Phils lead, and Chase Utley with a blast for an insurance run in the 8th.

Brett Myers whiffed 12 batters at Citizen's Bank Park as the Philadelphia
Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves by the count of 3 to 1.

Myers(11-5) put on a good performance. He didn't allow much, just 4 hits and
2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. Philadelphia managed only 6 on the afternoon.

Arthur Rhodes recorded the save, his 6th. Lance Cormier(2-4) was the losing
pitcher. Myers was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good zip
on my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on. The fans really
got into the game too - that always helps me. Now, if I can only do that
again in my next outing.'

September 3, 2006 Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 1

A big 5 run 5th inning would be all the scoring that the Jays would do, but it proved to be enough. The Sox bats were silent most of the game, only getting 2 hits off Gustavo Chacin in 7 innings and finally avoiding the shutout in the bottom of the 9th. Plenty of baserunners though, as Chacin walked 7 and the Sox left 11 on base.

The Sox now sit 12 back of Toronto in the division, and 11 back in the wildcard race with 25 games left to play.

September 2, 2006 Braves 10, Phillies 6

The Braves rough up 4 Phillie pitchers, scoring in 6 different innings for the 10-6 win in game 1 of a day-night doubleheader. It could have been worse, as catcher Chris Coste threw out 3 runners trying to steal, but Coste wasn't perfect as Edgar Renteria did have 2 steals with the ball thrown over second on one of them for a Coste error and he also committed a passed ball which scored a run. Lost in the shuffle is a nice 3 for 5, 3 RBI day for Shane Victorino.

It may be a little too early to be talking about magic numbers, but the Minnesota Twins are the closest with a magic number of 17, and next closest is the Phillies at 23.

At Citizen's Bank Park the Atlanta Braves easily handled the Philadelphia
Phillies by the score of 10 to 6.

Oscar Villarreal(5-6) pitched well enough to earn the win. He surrendered 10
hits and no walks in 6 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 2 'long-bombs'.
Atlanta simply wore out the Philadelphia pitching staff, scoring in 6
different innings.

Jon Lieber(8-7) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 6 runs and 9 hits in 6 and
1/3 innings.

September 2, 2006 Red Sox 9, Blue Jays 6

I haven't blogged anything in a few days because our internet was screwed up, but in the games not blogged the Nats beat the Phils 3-1 to hand Cole Hamels his second loss of the year, the Phils beat the Nats 5-3 by scoring 4 runs off Chad Cordero in the 9th inning on back to back homers by Chase Utley (3-run shot) and Ryan Howard (solo homer), and the Red Sox were embarassed by the Blue Jays 14-4.

The Sox get their revenge today despite a less than stellar start by Kevin Jarvis. Jarvis still gets the win despite allowing 6 runs in 5 innings because the 9-6 final score all occured in the first 5 innings! Javy Lopez had the big blast of the game, a 3-run smash in the 3rd and Mike Lowell went 4 for 5 with 2 doubles.

August 31, 2006 Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 4

After their 9 game road tip, the Sox come back to Fenway but cannot continue their winning ways, losing to Toronto and falling 11 games behind the Blue Jays in the division. All the runs today scored off the two starters, Roy Halladay and Julian Tavaras, in the first 6 innings.

The Jays jumped out in front 3-0 in their half of the 2nd inning, but the Sox got the three right back in the bottom of the 2nd with Dustin Pedroia's first big league homer, a 2-run shot, tying the game. Aaron Hill gave the Jays the lead back with a 2-run blast in the 5th, and the Blue Jays would not trail again. Halladay gets his 15th win, and the always tough B. J. Ryan retires the Sox 1-2-3 in the 9th for the save.

In a tight game it was the Toronto Blue Jays 6, the Boston Red Sox 4 at Fenway
Park.

Toronto took the lead for good in the 4th inning as they scored 2 runs on 2
base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Aaron Hill who quieted the
crowd when he cracked a two-run shot (his 6th of the season). Toronto won
despite being out-hit by Boston 11 hits to 7.

Roy Halladay(15-7) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 6 and 1/3
innings. B.J. Ryan was credited with his 38th save. Julian Tavarez(5-2) was
the loser. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings.

'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Halladay said,
'this was one of those times.'

August 30, 2006 Red Sox 1, A's 0

Curt Schilling is spectacular as he gets win number 15, a 3-hit, 11 strikeout shutout of the A's. Barry Zito was nearly as good, only allowing 2 hits but got an early hook in the 6th because he had walked 5 batters.

The Sox score their lone run in the 8th, as after Mike Lowell led off with a double and Gabe Kapler and Doug Mirabelli both flied out, Eric Hinske knocks Lowell in via a single. It was a 1-9 chance that Lowell would score, but I decided to go for it and it came up a 2!

I was debating when it came to the 9th whether to bring Papelbon in, but he had pitched each of the last 3 days and the rest of the bullpen has also pitched a lot lately, so Schilling stayed in and proceeds to strike out the side in the 9th to get the shutout.

Curt Schilling held Oakland scoreless on just 3 hits at McAfee Coliseum as the
Boston Red Sox beat the Oakland Athletics 1 to 0.

Schilling(15-9) simply dominated Oakland. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings. Schilling racked up 11 strikeouts improving his ERA
from 4.89 to 4.66. Boston had only 5 hits for the afternoon.

Kiko Calero(5-5) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in

felt I could throw it by everybody today.'

August 29, 2006 Phillies 14, Nationals 0

The Phillies bat around in the first, scoring 5 runs off Tony Armas Jr. (four of those before even getting an out) and get a big 5-run 5th while Brett Myers pitches a 3-hitter to rip the Nats in what looks more like the score of a football game than a baseball game!

Not helping Armas Jr.'s lousy start any was Ryan Wagner. Wagner lets 8 runs score off him in an inning an 1/3 including Chase Utley's 3-run homer, surprisingly considering the score the only homerun hit by the Phillies today. Meanwhile, Myers retires the first 16 batters to face him, not allowing a runner until Brian Schneider singles with one out in the 6th. Myers gets his 10th win of the season., and helps his own cause by scoring twice.

Chase Utley jacked one out of the ballyard and had 3 RBI and Brett Myers
carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning at RFK STADIUM as the Philadelphia
Phillies embarrassed the Washington Nationals by the lopsided score of 14 to
0.

Myers(10-5) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Washington offense. He
didn't give up much, just 3 hits and no walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA
from 4.92 to 4.66. The right-handed Myers had his no-hit bid broken up by
Brian Schneider who singled with one out in the 6th inning. Philadelphia had
14 hits for the night.

Tony Armas Jr(7-10) suffered the loss. With this win, Philadelphia has a
division leading 78-53 record. They have been 7-3 lately. With the loss,
Washington has a record of 7-3 lately, 61-70 overall.
