August 8, 2007 Phillies 3, Braves 0
| Rookie sensation Cole Hamels continues to mow down the opposition, going to 10-0 for the season with a 2-hitter, his first career shutout. The Braves only had 3 baserunners the entire game. Edgar Renteria tripled and Andruw Jones walked in the first, and Scott Thorman doubled in the 2nd inning. After the Thorman double, it would be lights out for the Braves as Hamels retires the last 22 batters to face him, having 13 strikeouts for the game. Now I am wondering what the best start to a major league career is. I remember Fernando Valenzuela for the Dodgers in the early 80s had a great start, and Tim Wakefield in his rookie year with the Pirates in the early 90s had a great start. I will have to try to find out what the record is. If you can find out, let me know because I am curious now. |

Cole Hamels held Atlanta scoreless on just 2 hits as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Atlanta Braves 3 to 0 at Turner Field.
Hamels(10-0) was virtually untouchable. He didn't give up much, just 2 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings. Hamels recorded 13 strikeouts reducing his ERA from
3.50 to 3.18. Philadelphia managed 9 in their victory.
Tim Hudson(9-7) was given the loss. 'Hamels gave us exactly what we needed
tonight,' Charlie Manual said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for
strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had
them chasing it.'
