August 7, 2006 Phillies 3, Braves 1

Back on July 19, the Atlanta Braves sat at 52-43, only 2 games behind the Phillies in 2nd place. The Braves have gone 4-12 since then, including a 7 game losing streak, while the Phillies have remained red hot to now sit 11 back of the Phils in 3rd place. But, as we know, last year broke the Braves run of 14 straight division titles anyway.

Brett Myers gives the bullpen the day off, going the distance striking out 10. Neither team had a hit until the 4th inning, when Ryan Howard tripled and scored when the ball was mishandled by Scott Thorman for an error. Marcus Giles got the Braves first hit, also in the 4th, when his solo homer tied the game. The Phils get a run in the 6th, and Chase Utley homers for the second straight day in the 8th for an insurance run.

Seemed like a very early hook for Horatio Ramirez, as he had only thrown 76 pitches and only allowed 3 hits and 2 runs when he was yanked in the 6th. One of those runs should be unearned since it scored directly on the error by Thorman, but for some reason the game counted it as an earned run. Why, I don't know, but whatever.

Brett Myers mowed down 10 Atlanta batters at Turner Field as the Philadelphia
Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves by the count of 3 to 1.

Myers(7-5) was very good in the win. He gave up just 5 hits and 3 walks in 9
innings improving his ERA from 5.12 to 4.84. Both teams totaled 5 on the
night.

Horacio Ramirez(4-5) absorbed the loss. Myers, when asked about his 10
strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if I get 20
and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we
won it feels great!'
