August 6. 2006 Devil Rays 6, Red Sox 5 (11)

Man, the Red Sox just cannot catch a break. Every time they start winning and it looks like they might finally get into gear, they lose a heartbreaker. Today was no different.

Had to go to the bullpen early, as after the Sox jumped out to a 4-1 lead Greg Norton hit a 3-run homer off starter Jason Johnson in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game at 4. Johnson was already over 100 pitches at that point, so he got the hook. Declarmen goes 2 shutout innnings, while Coco Crisp homers in the top of the 8th to give the Sox the 5-4 lead. Seanez goes for the 8th, runs into a little bit of trouble, so Papelbon comes in with 2 out in the 8th.

The Devil Rays get to Paps for a run in the 9th to tie the game back up, as he blows only his 3rd save of the year. Papelbon stayed in for a scoreless 10th, but after Julian Tavarez gets two quick outs in the 11th the Rays get two singles and a double to win the game.

The Red Sox currently sit in third, 7 games back of the Blue Jays for the division, and even further back in the wild card race. Better start winning soon.
