August 18, 2006 Red Sox 11, Yankees 1

The Sox do exactly what I was hoping they would do, ripping the Yanks 11-1 in game one of a doubleheader and the first game of a 5-game series. Everybody had at least a hit, scored a run or had an RBI. 8 of the 12 hits for the Red Sox were for extra bases, including 2 Mirabelli homers and 2 doubles for Youk. New edition Eric Hinske just missed a grand slam in the first inning, hitting a deep fly ball caught at the wall but did get a sac fly out of it.

I mispoke in the last Sox blog. They were 8 games (now 7) out of first, but behind the Blue Jays, not the Yankees. The Jays and Yanks have been swapping the division lead for quite a while, and I lost track of who was in first. Before this game, the Yankees were 1 1/2 games behind the Jays with the Sox in third, 8 back.

Catcher Doug Mirabelli slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Fenway Park as the
Boston Red Sox belted the New York (AL) Yankees by the count of 11 to
1.

Mirabelli helped send the fans home happy. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly'
in the 2nd inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 6th of
the season) in the 3rd inning. Boston ended up with 12 hits for the game
while New York (AL) had 6.

Jon Lester(4-3) allowed 1 run in 6 innings, and picked up the victory. Sidney
Ponson(2-7) suffered the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving
up 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.
