August 16, 2006 Tigers 3, Red Sox 1
| The Tigers win their 6th straight game and get out the broom, sweeping the Sox. Justin Verlander had a shutout going until the 8th, when Mark Loretta's single was misplayed by Magglio Ordonez, allowing Loretta to score on the play for the Sox only run. They almost came back in the 9th, as after the first 2 batters got out Wily Mo Pena singled, pinch-hitter Gabe Kapler singled to put Pena at third, but pinch-hitter Doug Mirabelli grounded out to end the game. The Sox now sit 8 games behind the first place Yankees, with a very important 5 game series coming up against the Yanks. That series, even though it is only mid-August, could make or break the Sox season. |

Justin Verlander(8-5) and David Wells(3-2) treated the Boston fans to a fine
pitching duel at Fenway Park. The Detroit Tigers eventually emerged as
victors over the Boston Red Sox by the score of 3 to 1.
Boston never recovered after Detroit took the lead in the top of the 3rd
inning scoring one runner using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Omar
Infante stroked a single. Ivan Rodriguez stepped up next and he stroked a
one-base hit. Craig Monroe then drew a walk to load the bases. Marcus
Thames was up next and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the run. Boston had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Todd Jones earned the save, his 17th. When questioned about the loss, Terry
Francona said, 'The fans got to see an exciting game out there tonight.
Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this time. Next time, though, we'll
be the clubhouse with all the smiles.'
