August 14, 2006 Mets 5, Phillies 1
| Cole Hamels gets his first major league loss, and he has Jose Reyes and Pedro Martinez to thank for it. With a runner on first, the score tied 1-1, and two out in the 4th, Pedro hits a grounder to Ryan Howard which he throws past first for an single and an error. Next batter Jose Reyes blasts a 3-run homer to give the Mets the lead they would never relinquish. Because it was a single and error, all the runs were earned. Pedro pitched a masterpiece, only allowing 2 hits until the 9th inning. Howard had both of them, a homerun and a double. The Phils got two singles in the 9th, so ex-teammate Billy Wagner comes in, strikes out the final two batters, and gets the save. At least Hamels can say that he got his first loss against Pedro Martinez, which ain't bad. And 10-1 ain't bad either! |
