August 20, 2006 Yankees 6, Red Sox 3
A good pitchers duel betwen Mike Mussina and Curt Schilling, with a 30-13 combined record before today, goes sour when Robinson Cano seemed to ice the game for the Yanks with a 3-run homer off Keith Foulke in the 8th to give New York the 6-1 lead. The Red Sox would get two runs back in the bottom of the 8th on an error by Johnny Damon (one of 4 Yankee errors today, as all 3 runs that they allowed were unearned) to close the gap to 6-3. In the bottom of the 9th, Mariano Rivera retires the first two batters, but Gabe Kapler and Coco Crisp both single to bring the tying run to the plate. However, Mark Loretta would ground out to end the game.

Right fielder Bobby Abreu had 4 hits at Fenway Park as the New York (AL)
Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 6 to 3.
In the top of the 2nd inning New York (AL) went on top for good plating an
isolated run on 3 hits. New York (AL) ended up with 11 hits for the game
while Boston had 8.
The victory was credited to Mike Mussina(17-6) who went 6 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. Mussina got relief help from Mariano Rivera who gained credit
for his 35th save. The losing pitcher was Curt Schilling(14-8). Despite the
loss, he struckout 10 New York (AL) batters in 6 and 2/3 innings.
August 20, 2006 Nationals 9, Phillies 7
So much for a winning streak, as the Phillies lose their 6th of the last 7 games. The Phils led for most of the game, with Mike Lieberthal being a big part of it. Lieb goes 3 for 4 with 4 ribbies, falling a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, with a bases clearing 3 run double in the 2nd inning for a 4-2 Phillies lead, and after Nats catcher Brandon Harper hits his first major league homerun to close the gap to 6-4 in the 6th, Lieberthal hits a homer of his own to make it 7-4 Phils. That lead would not hold up however, as all hell breaks loose in the Nats 8th. After the Nats load the bases against Geoff Geary and Rick White, Ryan Church smashes a pinch-hit grand slam homer off White and just like that erases the 3 run Phillie lead and put the Nats in front, 8-7. Alfonso Soriano adds a homer later in the inning, also off White, to make the score 9-7, which is the final as Chad Cordero gets the 2 inning save. No lack of power from either team with 6 home runs in the game. I know that the Phils have no trouble hitting the long ball, and from what I have seen the Nationals have no trouble doing it either.

August 19, 2006 Phillies 8, Nationals 6
The Phillies end their 5 game losing streak, shelling Ramon Ortiz for 6 runs and 7 hits in 1 2/3 innings. Chase Utley is the hitting star, going 2 for 3 with 2 homers. The Nats did make it interesting in the 4th, scoring 4 runs to close within 2 runs, but that was as close as they would get. Cole Hamels didn't have his best stuff today, but thanks to plenty of run support gets back on the winning track after getting his first loss in his last start. 11-1 now on the season.

Chase Utley launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
outscored the Washington Nationals 8 to 6.
Utley enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He blasted a two-run home run in
the 1st inning and ripped a solo home run (his 24th of the season) in the 4th
inning. Philadelphia had a total of 12 hits for the game.
Cole Hamels(11-1) went 6 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. Arthur
Rhodes earned the save, his 3rd. Ramon Ortiz(9-11) ended up with the loss.
When questioned, Charlie Manual remarked, 'It's been a while since a win felt
this good - heck, it's been a while since we had a win period!'

August 19, 2006 Yankees 14, Red Sox 7
The Yankees score big early and score big late, with the Sox scoring in between as the Red Sox fall back to .500. The Yanks jumped out in front 5-0 after 2 innings off Josh Beckett. Now due to the very overworked bullpen lately, I was saying oh no not again! I was hoping to get at least 6 innings out of him, and thought for sure that wouldn't happen. But, Beckett retires 14 straight to enable Mike Lowell to singlehandedly get the Sox back in the game with a 3-run homer in the 3rd and a 2-run shot in the 5th to tie the game 5-all. Beckett ended up going to the 8th, but after allowing 2 leadoff hits had to come out. Only one man was in the pen who hadn't pitched in the doubleheader yesterday - new callup Jermaine Van Buren. He promptly allows 3 straight doubles as the Yanks score 9 runs over the final two innings off Van Buren, Timlin and Declarmen to make the game a runaway as the relievers choke again. 15 extra base hits for the Yankees in the game, with 13 doubles (4 players had 2 doubles each) and 2 homers. Thanks to Mike Lowell, with his 3 for 4, 2 homer 6 RBI day, this game wasn't as much of a disaster as it could have been.

Jorge Posada went yard and had 4 RBI and Randy Johnson dominated striking out
11 Boston batters as the New York (AL) Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 14
to 7 at Fenway Park.
Posada was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors. He bombed a two-run dinger (his 13th
of the season) in the 2nd inning, doubled knocking in a run in the 8th inning
and stroked a base-hit which scored a run in the 9th inning. For the game
New York (AL) out-hit Boston 18 to 6.
Johnson(10-11) picked up the victory, allowing 5 runs in 8 innings. Josh
Beckett(8-11) was the loser. Johnson was humble when questioned about his
performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches this afternoon.
But, I had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That
was an extremely well called game!'

August 18, 2006 Nationals 8, Phillies 5
The Nats hand the Phillies their 5th straight loss with a 4 run 9th inning. I will get to those details later. First, let me tell you about today's Nats starter Tony Armas Jr. In his first 14 starts of the season up to June 9th, Armas was horrible, starting off 0-8 with a 6.53 ERA. Since that point, he has been sensational. Not including his last start (6 runs in 5 innings and a loss) and today's start, in a span of 7 starts he went 6-0. In that span of 48 1/3 innings, he only allowed 6 earned runs for an ERA of 1.12, lowering his season ERA by more than two runs, now at 6-9 and a 4.62 ERA for the season. Now for the game. The Phils jumped right out in front with a 2 run first inning, but the Nats get a run in the 3rd and a solo homer by Ryan Church in the 4th to tie the game at 2. Chase Utley's homer in the 6th gives the Phils the lead beck 3-2, but Daryle Ward's 2 run pinch hit homerun in the top of the 7th gives the Nats their first lead of the game 4-3. Mike Lieberthal's solo blast in the bottom of the 7th ties the game back up again 4-4, and David Dellucci's RBI double later in the inning gives the Phils the lead back 5-4. Then, disaster strikes. Ryan Madson comes in for the 8th and sails through the inning. I decide to leave Madson in for the 9th for the 2 inning save, but after an out and Austin Kearns pinch hit double and with Alfonso Soriano due up, I decide to go with Tom Gordon after all. Now with first base open, one out and a one run lead there is no way in hell that Soriano is going to get a chance to bat, so he is intentionally walked to set up the DP with Felipe Lopez coming to the plate. The move totally backfires, as Lopez blasts one over the fence for a 3-run homerun! To add insult to injury, next batter Ryan Zimmerman smacks a homer for back to back shots and an 8-5 Nats lead. Chad Cordero has no trouble in the 9th for his 31st save. It turns out that Soriano's intentional walk was the go ahead run, so if Madson had walked him before Gordon came in Madson would have gotten the loss. Instead, Gordon gave him the free pass so Gordon gets the loss. Just as well, since Gordon is the one who gave up the homers that cost the game, and Madson would have gotten a semi-undeserved loss had he walked Soriano.

Ryan Zimmerman touched them all and had 2 RBI as the Washington Nationals
staged a dramatic comeback over the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 8 to
5 at Citizen's Bank Park.
Washington had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when they
tallied 4 runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Felipe
Lopez who silenced the crowd when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 11th
of the season). A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 5
times.
Jon Rauch(4-8) went 2 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Chad Cordero
earned the save, his 31st. Tom Gordon(3-4) was the losing pitcher in relief.
He allowed 3 runs and 2 hits in 2/3 of an inning.
Frank Robinson was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office
after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just
sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating
wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!'
August 12, 2006 Tigers 15, White Sox 7 (10)
This one is a little late, but I just had to post it. I was looking at the who's hot and who's not stats, and I noticed a few things of interest. Brian Schneider of the Nats mired in a 1 for 29 slump, Aaron Rowand of the Phils 1 for 27, and Bobby Jenks of the White Sox with 7 innings, 20 hits and 19 runs....but with 3 saves! Now I am saying how the hell can a guy get 3 saves and allow 19 runs? Well, most of it was this game. Jenks game in with 2 out in the 8th with the White Sox leading, 5-2. He coughs up 3 runs in the 9th as the Tigers tie it. Then, the White Sox manager apparently has shit for brains as he leaves Jenks in for the massacre of his life. The Tigers score 10 more off Jenks in the 10th inning! For the game, Jenks pitched 2 innings, gave up 11 hits, 13 runs all earned, walked 3, gave up 3 homers, and threw 86 pitches!! Some starters don't even throw that many pitches in a game. Finally, after a bases loaded walk and a grand slam by Michael Thames for runs number 9 through 13 Jenks was mercifully given the hook. Now that is what I call a beating!

WEB GEMS- Bot 5th: Carlos Guillen robbed Jim Thome of a base hit.
Marcus Thames ripped 2 homeruns as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago
(AL) White Sox in 10 innings 15 to 7 at US Cellular Field.
The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. Detroit won the game in the
10th inning. The critical plate appearance was by Thames who deflated the
mood of the partisan fans when he depressed the partisan hometown fans with a
grand slam home run (his 19th of the season). Detroit bats were hot in the
10th inning with 10 runs on 7 hits. Overall Detroit out-hit Chicago (AL) 19
to 10.
Fernando Rodney(5-6) got the win allowing 2 runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Bobby
Jenks(1-8) was charged with the loss in relief. He served up 3 gopher balls
in 2 innings.
'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Thames said 'next
time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'

August 18, 2007 Yankees 9, Red Sox 7 (11)
AAARGH!! That is all I can say about this game. After the Red Sox were down 6-2 early, they battle back to tie the game 7-all in the 8th. But, I had to go to the bullpen early due to Jason Johnson sucking, and in game 2 of a doubleheader going to the bullpen in the 6th is never good. 9 walks for the Sox pitchers, which is why so many were used. In the 10th, had to use Foulke again after he had pitched in the opener, and when he allowed a couple of hits one in the 10th and one in the 11th, I figured I had better take him out. There were only two piychers left in the bullpen - Manny Declarmen and Craig Hansen. Declarmen pitched 2 innings in game 1, so I had to go with Hansen the absolute last thing I wanted to do. What does he do - first batter Johnny Damon blasts a 2-run homer to give the Yanks the 9-7 lead, and that is the final. The Yankees ran roughshod on the bases with 5 steals, 4 against Johnson. But, when he is a +9 holding runners, and there are guys like Bobby Abreu and Derek Jeter on the other team, that is to be expected. I will put the play account after the box score for you so you can follow everything.
