June 23, 2006 Phillies 10, Braves 9
| What started out a tight 3-2 Phils lead after 5 innings ended up a 10-9 final score, and a lot happened in between. The Braves broke the game open in the 6th inning, batting around scoring 6 runs for an 8-3 lead, and the game looked like a lost cause. In the bottom of the 8th, the Phils mount the comeback on a Jimmy Rollins 3-run homer (his second homer of the game), a Bobby Abreu triple and Chase Utley knocks Abreu in with a single to close the gap to 8-7. The Braves would get a run in the top of the 9th to make it 9-7, and in the bottom of the 9th the unbelievable happened. Ryan Howard led off with a homer to make it 9-8, David Bell doubles and Aaron Rowand singles to put runners on first and third. Mike Lieberthal hits a grounder to short, but with the infield playing in Bell couldn't score and Rowand went to second. Pinch-hitter David Dellucci is intentionally walked to set up the force at any base, and that brings up Jimmy Rollins, who has two homers for the game so far. Rollins strikes out for out number two, and Chase Utley plays hero for the second inning in a row hitting a double scoring Bell and Rowand and giving the Phillies the improbable comeback victory. The Phillies have gained ground on the Braves, four games ahead of them now but the red-hot Mets have overtaken the Braves for second place, only 2 behind the Phils. |

Jimmy Rollins smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Citizen's Bank Park as the
Philadelphia Phillies pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Atlanta
Braves by the count of 10 to 9.
Philadelphia had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 3
runs on 4 hits. Ryan Howard got things rolling when he hit a bases-empty
home run (his 29th of the season). David Bell stepped up to the plate and he
doubled. Aaron Rowand then banged out a single. After an out was recorded,
David Dellucci came to the plate and was walked intentionally to load the
bases. Rollins was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Chase
Utley did his part to keep things going and doubled resulting in an exciting
win for Philadelphia and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town
fans. Atlanta had 17 hits in the game while Philadelphia had 14, but
Philadelphia had the more timely hits.
The win went to Ryan Franklin(5-3) who allowed 1 run in 1 inning. Ken Ray(1-4)
was the loser in relief. He gave up 3 hits and 1 walk in 1/3 of an inning.
Charlie Manual was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when
asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he
volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Bobby Cox,
feels right now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you come up on
the short end of one of these!'
