July 31, 2006 Red Sox 7, Indians 3
| The Red Sox gain a game on the wildcard leading Indians, winning a rather bizzare game. Very uncharacteristically sloppy fielding for the Sox today with 3 errors (2 by Varitek), two of the errors leading directly to a run. Good start for David Wells in his return, with one run (unearned) and 3 hits allowed through 6 solid innings. A 3-run Wily Mo Pena double was the big hit of the game, part of a 4-run 4th inning. The big story today was runners left on base and walks. The Sox left the bases loaded 3 times and left 13 on base for the game, but still scored 7 runs courtesy of 9 hits and 13 (yes, 13!) walks. They scored twice in the 6th and once in the 8th courtesy of bases loaded walks, as the Indians pitchers just couldn't seem to find the strike zone. |
