July 30, 2006 Phillies 5, Marlins 4 (11)

Man, when you are hot these games go your way. The Phillies win their 9th straight in dramatic fashion, making me look like a managerial genius. Let me set the stage for you:

It looked like a long day for Ryan Madson, as the Marlins got to him for 2 runs in the first and the second for a 4-0 lead. I let Madson bat when he was due up for the first time in the third, and he ended up going 6 innings retiring 11 of the last 13 to face him. The two runners that he did allow were immediately erased on two separate double plays. Meanwhile, Brian Moehler is smoking right along, only allowing 2 hits through 6 innings. He started to finally run out of gas in the 7th, as the Phils got a couple of runners which end up scoring when Pat Burrell hits a double off Logan Kensing, but the Phils still trail 4-2.

In the bottom of the 8th, the pitchers spot is due to lead off the inning. Shane Victorino pinch hits, and walks. Jimmy Rollins lines out for the first out, but then David Dellucci blasts a 2-run homer off Taylor Tankersley (what a name!!) to tie the game 4-all. Now when it came time for a new pitcher for the 9th, my original plan was to have Victorino take over in right and having the pitcher take Dellucci's spot (the second spot) in the order, especially since for the 9th the Phils would have the 5-6-7 hitters due up and the 9 spot might have a chance to win the game if it came up again in the 9th. But, after Dellucci blasted that 2-run homer, I figured I had better leave him in the game, just in case he comes up again.

The Phils went down in order in the 9th and the 10th, with a pinch hitter batting for the pitcher in the 10th. Arthur Rhodes comes in to pitch the top of the 11th, walks 2 after getting two out, but gets out of the jam. Randy Messenger is the new Marlins pitcher for the 11th, and who is leading of the inning - David Dellucci. That would have been the pitcher, had I done what I was going to do originally. What does Dellucci do - blasts the first pitch from Messenger into the seats for the walk-off homer, and the Phils win!!

As you recall, Manny Ramirez did the same thing for the Red Sox a few games ago - hitting a game-tying homer late and a walk-off homer in extra innings. Some very dramatic endings recently.
