July 22, 2006 Red Sox 6, Mariners 5

Lots to talk about this game. Kason Gabbard makes his major league debut, and it is almost a disaster. The first four batters he faced reached base, with Ichiro Suzuki leading off with a walk, Willie Bloomquist doubles, Bloomquist steals second while Ichiro steals home on the double steal for a run, Adrian Beltre triples for a run, and Richie Sexon doubles for another run. A run would score later in the inning for a 4-0 Mariners lead.

Gabbard settled down nicely after that, retiring 12 straight at one point before being relieved in the 6th. Meanwhile, the Sox couldn't get anything going on offense until getting 2 runs in the 7th on a Youkilis pinch-hit double. The Sox would tie the score 4-all with 2 more runs in the 8th on a Mirabelli double, and take the 6-4 lead in the 9th with 2 more runs after Ortiz walked, Manny knocks him in with a triple and Trot with a sac fly.

They would need all those runs, as the Mariners get 3 straight singles off Papelbon to lead off the bottom of the 9th by Jones, Ibanez and Ichiro to get one run back. Still with no outs, Bloomquist tried to bunt but pops it up as Ichiro gets doubled off first for the double play, and Beltre struck out to end the game to give the Sox the improbable comeback win.

Ichiro had 4 stolen bases for the day, with the steal of home and stealing 2nd and 3rd in the same inning later in the game
