August 3. 2006 Indians 17, Red Sox 1

For the second time in less than a wek, the Sox get ripped with the Indians doing the damage this time. Josh Beckett was today's victim, as he completely fell apart in the 3rd inning allowing the first 7 batters to reach base, all scoring. Boone walked, Sizemore doubles with Boone going to thrid, Inglett walks to load the bases and Hafner walks to force in a run. Victor Martines slams a grand slam for a 5-0 lead, Blake singles and Hollandsworth doubles. With 3 walks, 4 hits with a single, 2 doubles and a granny, that was it for Beckett. Rudy Seanez then allows a single to Choo to score 2, all runs charged to Beckett.

A Manny homer, number 30 of the year, in the 9th spoiled Jake Westbrook's bid for the shutout, but he still goes the distance. 19 hits for the Indians, with 9 doubles (3 by Grady Sizemore) and 4 homers (2 for Travis Hafner, part of a 3 for 4, 5 RBI, 4 run scored day).

Travis Hafner smashed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Jake Westbrook was able to
finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at Fenway Park
as the Cleveland Indians belted the Boston Red Sox by the count of 17 to
1.

Hafner enjoyed a great evening at the plate. He delivered a base-hit in the
1st inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 5th
inning and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 33rd of the
season) in the 7th inning. Cleveland bats were hot in the 3rd inning which
saw them plate 7 runs on 5 hits and the 7th inning with 4 runs on 4 hits.
Cleveland managed 19 in their victory.

Westbrook(6-9), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. The losing
pitcher was Josh Beckett(8-8). He was knocked around by Cleveland, allowing
6 hits and 3 walks in 2 innings.

August 2, 2006 Cardinals 6, Phillies 4

Juan Encarnacion blasted a big 3-run homer in the bottom of the 6th to give the Cards their first lead of the game 5-4, and that would prove to be the difference in the game. The Phillie bats continue to smoke with 10 hits today, but couldn't translate it into enough runs on the scoreboard.

The Cardinals beat the Phils for the second straight day, win their 7th straight, and also wrest the NL's best record away from the Phillies.

St. Louis tallied 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning with the help of 3
hits. The highlight belonged to Juan Encarnacion who came through for the
home fans when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 18th of the season). St.
Louis had a total of 8 hits for the game.

Braden Looper(5-2) got the win allowing no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Jason
Isringhausen recorded his 34th save. Brett Myers(6-5) suffered the loss. He
pitched 6 and 2/3 innings giving up 8 hits and 1 walk.

With the win, St. Louis continued their winning ways; their streak now stands
at 7 games and counting. 'Everything seems to be going right for us' said
Tony LaRussa. 'I've got the easiest job in the league right now!'

August 2, 2006 Red Sox 8, Indians 7

Hard fought win today, as the lead changed hands 4 times and the Sox blew a 5-0 lead at one point. The Indians threatened in the 9th getting two runners on against Papelbon, but he was able to squelch the rally.

Little bit of a different lineup today. Mark Loretta has been in a horrid 2 for 36 slump (even with still batting .294) prior to today, so I decided to knock him down to the 7 spot and put Youkilis 2nd. That move paid off immediatly, as in the first inning Crisp singled and Youk ripped a 2-run homer, part of a 3 RBI day with a double knocking in the other run. Loretta got a 2-run double out of that 7 hole, as everybody but Doug Mirabelli had at least one hit. He and Casey Blake were the only two starters today for both teams who didn't have a hit.

Julian Tavarez(4-0) did what was required of him in relief and came away with
the win. He was reached for 4 hits and 1 walk in 2 and 1/3 innings.
Cleveland threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Tavarez got help from Jonathan Papelbon who was credited with his 25th save.
Jeremy Sowers(0-4) took the loss. He allowed 11 hits and 2 walks in 6 and
1/3 innings.

Eric Wedge was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It was a manager's
nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.'

August 1, 2006 Indians 2, Red Sox 1

Jason Johnson pitches well enough for his second Sox win, but drops to 1-2 in a Sox uniform as the lack of run support did him in. The only Sox run of the game came in the 6th, as an error and a single and error (both errors by C.C. Sabitha, who otherwise pitches a great game) poke one across. Although, they had a chance in the 8th to tie it.

In the bottom of the 8th, Alex Gonzales doubles with one out. He is only a 12 running, so I bring in the only guy on the bench with any decent speed, Gabe Kapler who is a 14 runner, to pinchrun. Next batter Coco Crisp laces a single to right with a 1-15 chance that Kapler will score. I go for it to tie the game, and it comes up a 20!! Hell, even Rickey Henderson would have been out on that one. Crisp does go to second on the throw, but Loretta flies out to end the inning. They go down quietly in the 9th, even with the meat of the order up, Ortiz, Ramirez and Youkilis.

July 31, 2006 Red Sox 7, Indians 3

The Red Sox gain a game on the wildcard leading Indians, winning a rather bizzare game. Very uncharacteristically sloppy fielding for the Sox today with 3 errors (2 by Varitek), two of the errors leading directly to a run. Good start for David Wells in his return, with one run (unearned) and 3 hits allowed through 6 solid innings. A 3-run Wily Mo Pena double was the big hit of the game, part of a 4-run 4th inning.

The big story today was runners left on base and walks. The Sox left the bases loaded 3 times and left 13 on base for the game, but still scored 7 runs courtesy of 9 hits and 13 (yes, 13!) walks. They scored twice in the 6th and once in the 8th courtesy of bases loaded walks, as the Indians pitchers just couldn't seem to find the strike zone.

Johan Santana perfect game

The leading Cy Young candidate Johan Santana goes to 17-3, and you can see why with games like this - a PERFECT GAME!! The Tigers send 27 men to the plate, and 27 men go down in order. Way back in the dice days when I was a kid I had a perfect game, but I messed with the dice so it would happen. This is the first real perfect game I have ever had in the over 20 year history of my SOM.

History was made in Minnesota as Johan Santana(17-3) thrilled the crowd by
tossing a perfect game and the Minnesota Twins defeated the reeling Detroit
Tigers by the score of 4 to nothing.

Santana had an afternoon to remember. Heck, it's one we'll all remember! What
a game at Metrodome! The tension started to build around the 6th inning. By
the 9th inning the crowd was electrified. Santana struckout 12 Detroit
batters. Minnesota managed 9 in their victory.

Jeremy Bonderman(9-9) took the loss. He pitched 4 and 2/3 innings allowing 6
hits and 1 walk. 'Santana pitched one heck of a game!' Ron Gardenhire said.
'He didn't get away with any bad pitches because he just didn't throw any bad
pitches. What a performance!'

July 30, 2006 Marlins 5, Phillies 1

The winning streak ends at 9 as the Marlins take game two of a doubleheader in a very sloppilly pitched game on both sides. Randy Wolf gets his first start of the year and shows the rust, walking 4 in 6 2/3 and getting the loss. 11 walks overall in the game, with the Phils walking 6 and the Marlins 5. Even Marlins stopper Joe Borowski got a rare at-bat, and ripped a double and scored a run!

Miguel Cabrera cracked a homer as the Florida Marlins topped the Philadelphia
Phillies by a score of 5 to 1 at Citizen's Bank Park.

Florida went ahead for good in the 5th inning plating an isolated run using 2
hits. Florida managed 10 in their victory.

Anibal Sanchez(5-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and
allowing 1 run. Joe Borowski earned the save, his 27th. Randy Wolf(0-1)
absorbed the loss.

'After the stretch we have been through lately, this victory is especially
sweet' offered Joe Girardi. Now, we just have to make this the norm - not
the exception!'

July 30, 2006 Red Sox 8, Angels 3

The Sox get revenge on the Halos for yesterday's 20-2 shellacking, as Manny Ramirez continues his recent hot hitting. 2 for 3 with a walk squeezed in, scoring 3 times and knocking in 4 courtesy of a 2-run blast in the first inning and another 2-run shot off a tiring John Lackey in the 7th.

All the Sox scoring came via the long ball today, as along with Manny's 2 homers Jason Varitek blasted a 3-run shot in the 6th, and Big Papi's 45th of the year in the 3rd. All four homers were off of Lackey, who allowed all 8 runs in 6 2/3. I think the Angles manager might have stayed stayed with him a bit too long with the 5 runs he allowed over his last inning and 2/3.

Team-leading win number 12 for Curt Schilling. I only wanted him to go 7 innings, but with the overworked bullpen yesterday I had to have him go 8 and had Paps pitch the 9th, even though it wasn't a save situation.

July 30, 2006 Phillies 5, Marlins 4 (11)

Man, when you are hot these games go your way. The Phillies win their 9th straight in dramatic fashion, making me look like a managerial genius. Let me set the stage for you:

It looked like a long day for Ryan Madson, as the Marlins got to him for 2 runs in the first and the second for a 4-0 lead. I let Madson bat when he was due up for the first time in the third, and he ended up going 6 innings retiring 11 of the last 13 to face him. The two runners that he did allow were immediately erased on two separate double plays. Meanwhile, Brian Moehler is smoking right along, only allowing 2 hits through 6 innings. He started to finally run out of gas in the 7th, as the Phils got a couple of runners which end up scoring when Pat Burrell hits a double off Logan Kensing, but the Phils still trail 4-2.

In the bottom of the 8th, the pitchers spot is due to lead off the inning. Shane Victorino pinch hits, and walks. Jimmy Rollins lines out for the first out, but then David Dellucci blasts a 2-run homer off Taylor Tankersley (what a name!!) to tie the game 4-all. Now when it came time for a new pitcher for the 9th, my original plan was to have Victorino take over in right and having the pitcher take Dellucci's spot (the second spot) in the order, especially since for the 9th the Phils would have the 5-6-7 hitters due up and the 9 spot might have a chance to win the game if it came up again in the 9th. But, after Dellucci blasted that 2-run homer, I figured I had better leave him in the game, just in case he comes up again.

The Phils went down in order in the 9th and the 10th, with a pinch hitter batting for the pitcher in the 10th. Arthur Rhodes comes in to pitch the top of the 11th, walks 2 after getting two out, but gets out of the jam. Randy Messenger is the new Marlins pitcher for the 11th, and who is leading of the inning - David Dellucci. That would have been the pitcher, had I done what I was going to do originally. What does Dellucci do - blasts the first pitch from Messenger into the seats for the walk-off homer, and the Phils win!!

As you recall, Manny Ramirez did the same thing for the Red Sox a few games ago - hitting a game-tying homer late and a walk-off homer in extra innings. Some very dramatic endings recently.

July 29, 2006 Phillies 4, Marlins 2

The Phils win their season-high 8th straight game and are the hottest team in the majors right now. Cole Hamels pitched well enough to go to 9-0 with his 11 strikeout performance, but I had to pinch-hit for him in the bottom of the 7th with the score tied at 2-2.

Much different lineup now. I try to keep things realistic, since the opposing teams lineups are whatever is already in there. Jimmy Rollins hasn't played the last 3 games, as he was apparently hobbled up a bit. Abraham Nunez was playing shortstop, but now that David Bell is gone to the Brewers, Nunez will play third and Danny Sandoval was called up from the minors and played short today. Bobby Abreu also wasn't in the starting lineup as today is the day that he and Lidle went to the Yankees, but I decided to bring him as a pinch-hitter for one last at bat.

The batting order I change around a bit, but who plays is whoever actually was in the starting lineup that day. Like the Sox with Crisp and Youkilis. Youkilis is still the leadoff guy and Crisp 8th, but I and you have put Crisp leadoff and I have had Youk batting 6th since he has been so hot.

Once all the players get sorted out on the Phils and all the trades happen, I will get the feel of where in the lineup they will best perform and take it from there. Hopefully they will stay hot, even with all the changes.

Cole Hamels whiffed 11 batters as the blistering-hot Philadelphia Phillies
topped the Florida Marlins by a score of 4 to 2 at Citizen's Bank
Park.

Geoff Geary(6-1) won the game with a masterful relief performance. He allowed
only 1 hit and no walks in 2 innings. Florida proved to be no trouble in the
9th.

Chris Resop(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. It was another victory
for Philadelphia at Citizen's Bank Park. Now their winning streak stands at
8 games. Charlie Manual was in a great frame of mind in the clubhouse after
the game, 'Everybody's contributing now. Timely hitting, some slick fielding
plays and good pitching when we need it. Man, when that's happening, this
sure is an easy job!'
