June 24, 2006 Red Sox 6, Phillies 5
| The Red Sox never had the lead in this game until when it counted - the final score. Every time the Phillies would take the lead, the Sox would come right back to tie it. Less than stellar starts ofr both starters, Brett Myers (6 inn., 9 hits, 4 runs) and Curt Schilling (6 inn., 7 hits, 5 runs including 4 homeruns). Bobby Abreu's homer in the first inning gives the Phils the early lead, but David Ortiz's 32nd of the year tied the game in the bottom of the first. David Bell's solo shot makes it 2-1 Phils in the top of the 2nd, but an Alex Gonzalez RBI single tied it right back up at 2 in the bottom of the 2nd. Bell's second homerun of the game (a 2-run shot) in the top of the 5th gives the Phils the 4-2 lead. The Sox come right back in the bottom of the 6th on a Youkilis 2-run homerun to tie the game at 4-all. Aaron Rowand chases Schilling from the game in the top of the 7th with a homer to give the Phillies the 5-4 lead. The Phils have a chance to put the game away in the 8th with the bases loaded and two out when David Bell brought his 2 homer game to the plate, but Bell strikes out. In the bottom of the 8th, Geoff Geary gets 2 quick outs but then allows a single. Tom Gordon comes into the game, and the adventure begins. Youkilis and Loretta single to load the bases, bringing Big Papi to the plate. Ortiz walks to score the tying run. Gordon stays on for the bottom of the 9th, but Jason Varitek triples and with Mike Lowell at the plate Gordon lets one fly to the backstop for a game ending wild pitch! First time I think I have ever had a game won on a wild pitch. |

Boston Red Sox broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 6 to 5
win over the Philadelphia Phillies and sending their hometown fans home
smiling.
The deciding run was scored by Boston in the 9th. After an out was recorded,
Jason Varitek tripled. Tom Gordon then was wild with a pitch giving Boston
the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. This was the kind of
game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.
Jonathan Papelbon(1-1) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win.
Gordon(1-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and
surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk.
