June 21, 2006 Nationals 5, Red Sox 4
| The Nationals sweep the Sox winning a hard fought squeaker today. This game could have gone either way. Shawn Hill vs. Jon Lester today. The Nats opened the scoring with 2 runs in the 3rd on singles by Schneider and Soriano, Vidro's doubleplay ball put Schneider at 3rd. Jose Guillen and Ryan Zimmerman hit back to back doubles for a 2-0 Nats lead. Sox come back in the 5th on a Mike Lowell solo homerun, a Crisp double and a Loretta RBI single to tie the game at 2. The Sox take the 3-2 lead in the 6th with a Manny walk, he goes to second on a Trot groundout. Varitek singles, but the ball gets by Alfonso Soriano for a 2 base error which scores Manny. However, the Nationals come right back in the 7th. With Lester over 100 pitches, Manny Declarmen comes in and gets 2 quick outs. Then, Guillen walks, Zim singles, and Matt Lecroy (the DH for the Nats today) blasts a 3-run homer for a 5-3 Nats lead. Chad Cordero comes in for the Nats with one out in the 8th, and almost chokes in the 9th. Coco singles to lead it off, and steals 2nd to get out of a possible doubleplay. Cordero then gets 2 quick outs. Loretta singles to score Crisp, to bring up Big Papi, just the man you want to bat with trailing by a run, 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th with a runner on base. Not this time, as Ortiz hits a liner to second to end the game. |
