June 18, 2006 red Sox 8, Braves 4 (18)
| Damn!! That is all I can say about this game, the longest in the majors this season. The two staff aces lock horns, with John Smoltz and his major league leading 1.72 ERA against Curt Schilling, with his 9-3 record. Both were long gone by the time the game ended. I had to pinch hit for Schilling in the 6th despite his low pitch count because of the score, and it works as the Sox ended up tying the game. Both teams had chances in the extra innings, with Alex Gonzalez thrown out at home to end the 10th by Scott Thornton (who was making his major league debut this game). The Braves loaded the bases in th 12 off Papelbon, but could not score. Finally, the Sox busted it open in the 18th with Manny's RBI double, Alex Cora's 2-run single and pitcher Javier Lopez (nobody was left on the bench to pinch hit, so he had to bat) with an RBI double. Both teams went through their entire bench today. I put the play account below it so you can follow all the action for yourself. Pity poor Scott Thornton. Throwing out Gonzalez at home was the only thing he did all game, as he went 0 for 8. Jason Varitek sucked too, going 0 for 6 striking out 5 times before Mirabelli came into the game. Next up are the Nationals, who have been the hottest team around recently. After snapping that 12 game losing streak they are 10-3 since then, losing to the Yankees today to snap a 6 game winning streak! |

Mark Loretta had 3 base hits as the Boston Red Sox topped the Atlanta Braves
in 18 innings by a score of 8 to 4 at Turner Field.
The score was tied at 4 after nine. Boston won the game in the 18th inning.
The key offensive moment was provided by Alex Cora who deflated the mood of
the partisan fans when he slapped a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners.
Boston had 19 hits for the night while Atlanta had 10.
Javier Lopez(2-0) allowed no runs in 3 innings, and picked up the victory.
Macay McBride(2-3) was given the loss in relief. He was touched for 6 hits
and 3 walks in 2 innings.
