June 17, 2006 Red Sox 8, Braves 7

The Red Sox seem to like the light Atlanta air, busting out to an 8-2 lead after 3 1/2 innings, smoking Braves starter Lance Cormier for 7 runs in 2 2/3. A Varitek RBI groundout in the first, back to back RBI doubles by Youk and Loretta in the 2nd, an Alex Gonzalez 2-run triple and a 2-run homer by pitcher Josh Beckett (!!) in the 3rd, and Big Papi's 30th homer in the 4th gave them the big lead. They wouldn't score again the rest of the game though, as the Braves chipped away at the lead closing to 8-7 after 6 innings. The pitchers took over from there, and 8-7 ends up the final.

The homerun by Beckett is the first homerun that a Red Sox pitcher has ever had in the interleague in my SOM. I looked at the actual stats for the real season, and Beckett did hit a homerun during the real season. I figured he had to have, if his card is a 8N.

David Ortiz slammed a homerun and Jonathan Papelbon performed beautifully in
relief as the Boston Red Sox topped the Atlanta Braves by a score of 8 to 7
at Turner Field.

Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring one runner
using 2 hits. Atlanta was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5
separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that
pitching is also needed to win ballgames.

The winning pitcher was Javier Lopez(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3
innings. Lopez got help from Papelbon who was credited with his 16th save.
Lance Cormier(1-2) was the losing pitcher. Boston scored big getting 7 runs
off him in 2 and 1/3 innings.
