June 14, 2006 Nationals 3, Rockies 0 (15)
| This game featured one of the most unlikeliest pitchers duels you will ever see, with each starters pitching log easily a win and shutout in a normal game. Byung-Hyun Kim of the Rockies goes 9 2/3 innings of one hit, shutout ball (the only hit being a Ryan Zimmerman single in the 2nd inning) before being relieved in the 10th. Tony Armas Jr, if this were a normal game, would have surely had his first win of the year, but happened to pick a 0-0 extra inning battle to do it. Armas goes 10 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits. Jon Rauch comes in relief of Armas in the 11th (after Armas had thrown 153 pitches!!) and gets the second Nationals hit of the game himself in the bottom of the 11th. He is no slouch on the mound either, going 4 innings of one hit, shutout ball in relief. Finally, in the bottom of the 15th, Alfonso Soriano blasts a 2 out, 3 run walk-off homerun to win the game for the Nationals! The 15 inning game is in a 5-way tie for the second longest game, the longest being a 17 inning game between Atlanta and Florida. Probably the most amazing thing about this game is that only once in the entire game was a pitcher pinch-hit for. Marlon Anderson pinch-hit for Mike Stanton in the 15th, reached base, and then scored when the next batter Soriano blasted the game-winning homer. |

Tony Armas Jr delivered 10 solid innings at RFK STADIUM as the Washington
Nationals beat the Colorado Rockies in 15 innings 3 to 0.
No runners had crossed home plate after the regulation nine. Washington ended
up winning it in the 15th inning. Daryle Ward led off and keyed the rally
when he doubled. After another out, Marlon Byrd got his turn next, but he
was a strikeout victim. Marlon Anderson then was walked intentionally.
Alfonso Soriano followed and he clubbed a three-run home run (his 22nd of the
season) making Washington the winners and sending the 26,025 fans home happy.
Both teams totaled 6 on the night.
Mike Stanton(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing
no runs. Ray King(2-2) was the loser in relief.
The Washington ballclub's record now stands at 25-42. With the loss Colorado
now has a record of 37-28.
