May 26, 2006 Red Sox 5, Devil Rays 2

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are the worst team in the league at almost 20 games below .500 - that is why I was so shocked that the Red Sox blew that 5 run lead in the previous game and lost. They almost lost again today.

Solid starts by both starters, Scott Kazmir and David Wells, had this a 1-1 pitchers duel entering the 8th inning. Mike Timlin comes into the game in the 8th, and the first batter he faces, Julio Lugo, smashes a solo homerun to put the Rays in front, 2-1. I was like oh no, not again! But, the Sox get a run back in the bottom of the 8th off Chad Harville to tie it back up at 2. Julian Tavares comes in for the 9th, and puts the Rays down quietly. Harville stays in for the 9th, and the Sox go to work. Youkilis singles, and goes to second on a wild pitch. Loretta walks, to bring up Mr. Big Papi. I thought for sure the Rays would change pitchers, but Harville stays in and Ortiz slams homerun number 20, a 3-run walk-off homer, and the Sox win!!

Third baseman Mike Lowell hit 2 doubles at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox
won in their last at-bat beating the Tampa Bay Devil Rays by the count of 5
to 2.

Boston won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 3
runs using 2 hits. Kevin Youkilis led off the inning for Boston when he
lined a single. Chad Harville then let a pitch get away from him. Mark
Loretta then drew a walk. David Ortiz followed and he smacked a three-run
homer (his 20th of the season) giving Boston the win much to the delight of
the home town crowd. Boston totaled 10 on the night.

Julian Tavarez(3-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory.
The loss was charged to Harville(0-4) in relief. He surrendered 4 runs and 4
hits in 1 inning.
