June 9, 2006 Nationals 7, Phillies 5
| Ugh. That is all I can say about this ugly, ugly loss. The 0-8 Tony Armas Jr. got the start for the Nats, and he looked 0-8 after the Phillies jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, with Aaron Rowand's 3-run homer the highlight. Marlon Anderson got one back against Brett Myers with a solo shot in the bottom of the 2nd to make it 4-1. Armas settled down nicely after that horrid beginning, not allowing much until Rowand hit his second homer of the game to lead off the 6th, after the Nats got two runs in the bottom of the 5th. 5-3, Phillies at this point. Marlon Byrd should have had a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 6th, but was robbed by Rowand on a spectacular catch. Everything just fell apart for the Phillies after that. Nick Johnson's 2-run homer in the bottom of the 7th took Armas off the hook and tied the game at 5. Arthur Rhodes comes in relief of Myers for the bottom of the 8th, and proceeds to suck total ass. A single, double, and a walk load the bases, Damian Jackson's single knocks in a run, and Alfonso Soriano's sac fly bring home an insurance run. In the bottom of the 9th against Chad Cordero, baserunning mistakes for the Phils cost them big. After Sal Fasano struck out, pinch hitter David Dellucci smacks one to right. He tried for a double, but Anderson throws him out at second for the second out. Jimmy Rollins then hits a solid single. He tries to steal second to get into scoring position, but is picked off first by Cordero, ending the game. |
