Matt Cain whiffed 14 batters as the San Francisco Giants defeated the
Pittsburgh Pirates in 13 innings by the score of 1 to 0 at SBC Park.
Neither pitching staff had allowed a run after the regulation nine innings.
San Francisco came out on top in the 13th inning. Omar Vizquel doubled.
Lance Niekro came next and he stroked a single making San Francisco the
victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. San Francisco had a
total of 7 hits for the game.
The victory went to Brad Hennessey(4-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
The loss was charged to Roberto Hernandez(2-3) in relief. The San Francisco
ballclub's record now stands at 28-32. With the loss Pittsburgh now has a
record of 27-34.
