June 9, 2006 Nationals 7, Phillies 5
Ugh. That is all I can say about this ugly, ugly loss. The 0-8 Tony Armas Jr. got the start for the Nats, and he looked 0-8 after the Phillies jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, with Aaron Rowand's 3-run homer the highlight. Marlon Anderson got one back against Brett Myers with a solo shot in the bottom of the 2nd to make it 4-1. Armas settled down nicely after that horrid beginning, not allowing much until Rowand hit his second homer of the game to lead off the 6th, after the Nats got two runs in the bottom of the 5th. 5-3, Phillies at this point. Marlon Byrd should have had a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 6th, but was robbed by Rowand on a spectacular catch. Everything just fell apart for the Phillies after that. Nick Johnson's 2-run homer in the bottom of the 7th took Armas off the hook and tied the game at 5. Arthur Rhodes comes in relief of Myers for the bottom of the 8th, and proceeds to suck total ass. A single, double, and a walk load the bases, Damian Jackson's single knocks in a run, and Alfonso Soriano's sac fly bring home an insurance run. In the bottom of the 9th against Chad Cordero, baserunning mistakes for the Phils cost them big. After Sal Fasano struck out, pinch hitter David Dellucci smacks one to right. He tried for a double, but Anderson throws him out at second for the second out. Jimmy Rollins then hits a solid single. He tries to steal second to get into scoring position, but is picked off first by Cordero, ending the game.

June 8, 2006 Nationals 9, Phillies 4
After ending their 12 game losing streak, the Nationals have now won 3 in a row, opening the 4 game series by beating the Phillies for the first time in 7 tries so far this season. The Nats scored in each of the first four innings, chasing Phillies starter Eude Brito from the game early. Plenty of chances for the Phillies, as they left 14 men on base. Lack of clutch hitting cost them this time.

June 8, 2006 Red Sox 4, Yankees 1
The Sox end a 6 game losing streak with Mike Lowell's 2-run homerun being the big blow for the game. Solid start for Curt Schilling, only allowing 3 hits and a run through 7 innings, as Foulke pitches a spotless 8th and Papelbon strikes out the side with a double squeezed in between in the 9th. A VERY early hook for the Yankees' Jaret Wright, as after walking 2 in the first and allowing a single, Lowell's homer, and two more singles before retiring a batter in the 2nd he was yanked. Sure, it wasn't the greatest beginning to a game, but it still seems really early to yank him after not even 40 pitches. The Yanks relievers did fine though, as the Sox only got one more run for the game.

Third baseman Mike Lowell homered and had 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated
the New York (AL) Yankees 4 to 1 at Yankee Stadium.
In the 2nd inning Boston scored 3 runs when they had 4 base hits. That early
run support was enough for Curt Schilling(7-3) and Boston. Boston had 9 hits
overall, while New York (AL) had 4.
Jonathan Papelbon recorded the save, his 14th. The losing pitcher was Jaret
Wright(2-5). He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 4 hits and 2 walks.

June 7, 2006 Phillies 8, Diamondbacks 3
The Phillies take 2 out of 3 from the Diamondbacks with the win today thanks to the long ball, but not from the expected sources as the top four spots in the order went 0 for 15! Shane Victorino with a 3-run homer and Sal Fasano with a 2-run blast capped a 6 run 4th inning, with all 6 runs scoring before getting an out. 6 of the 8 Phillies hits were for extra bases, with Fasano adding a double and David Dellucci with 2 doubles and a homer. I will have plenty of time to play some SOM and catch up to you, because Tina is going up to RI for two weeks. She won't be back until July 8th.

Left fielder David Dellucci left the yard and had 3 RBI at Chase Field as the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8 to 3.
Dellucci led the offense for Philadelphia. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown'
(his 1st of the season) in the 2nd inning, doubled scoring a run in the 4th
inning and doubled knocking in a run in the 7th inning. Both teams ended up
with 8 on the afternoon.
Ryan Madson(2-3) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Dustin
Nippert(0-1) ended up with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 3
innings of work.

June 6, 2006 Phillies 9, Diamondbacks 7
Jimmy Rollins is the star again, going 3 for 4 with 2 solo homeruns and scoring 4 times. Ryan Howard and David Bell gave Rollins some competision though, with Howard hitting a grand slam and Bell going 3 for 5, falling a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. I didn't think I would have to get a save out of Gordon this game, as the Phils led 9-4 entering the bottom of the 9th. Clay Condrey, however, allows two singles and two walks, with the second walk forcing in a run. With the bases loaded and no outs, even with a 4 run lead Gordon came in. He did allow a 2 run single to Damian Easley, but still gets the save. In other news, the Washington Nationals (who are the Phillies next opponent after this series) beat the Braves today 5-3, which breaks the Nats 11 game losing streak! The Nats have the majors worst record right now at 19-40.

Jimmy Rollins cracked 2 homeruns and scored 4 times at Chase Field where the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9 to 7.
Rollins had a good evening at the plate. He delivered a solo blast in the 1st
inning, cracked a solo homerun (his 15th of the season) in the 2nd inning and
laced a base-knock in the 8th inning. Arizona threatened in the 9th but
their rally came up short.
Cole Hamels(3-0) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Tom Gordon gained credit for his 11th save. Russ Ortiz(1-3) absorbed the
loss. He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 4 innings of work.
'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Hamels, 'I got burned on
a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
June 5, 2006 Diamondbacks 5, Phillies 3
The Phillief relief corps are awesome again today, as the D'Backs do all their damage off Cory Lidle in the first 4 innings, and the relievers shut them down for the rest of the game. However, it is hard to win a game if you can't make contact with the ball. Jorge Julio and Jose Valverde combine to pitch the final 3 innings, and strike out 8 of the 9 Phillie hitters. 14 K's total for the Phillie batters in the game.

In a two run game the Arizona Diamondbacks offense put up 4 runs on the
scoreboard in the 3rd inning and got by the Philadelphia Phillies by the
score of 5 to 3.
Arizona came up with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning with the help of 4
hits. That was all the runs Brandon Webb(4-5) needed. Webb was helped out
by Jose Valverde who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 16th save.
Cory Lidle(3-3) was hit with the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 4
innings.
June 5, 2006 Yankees 6, Red Sox 2
The Red Sox cannot gain ground on the first place Yankees, and fall 6 1/2 games out of first. The Sox slump continues: 3-9 in the last 12 games. That is why Paplebon pitched the 8th inning of a 6-2 loss - he hadn't pitched since May 25th, 11 days ago! At least both Sox runs came on homeruns - solo shots for Jason Varitek and Trot Nixon. You may have noticed Jason Giambi's batting line for the game: 3 at bats, 1 run, 1 hit and 5 RBI's. Now the most RBI you can get in one at bat is 4, but the one hit was not a grand slam. How did he get the 5 RBI you may ask? A 3-run homer, a bases loaded walk, and a groundout that scored a run.

The New York (AL) Yankees toppled the Boston Red Sox by a 6 to 2 score at
Yankee Stadium.
New York (AL) drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first
inning scoring a single run. Johnny Damon drew a walk. Melky Cabrera
stepped up to the plate and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Josh Beckett then
fired a sharp breaking ball that appeared to cross-up the catcher. In any
event, it got by him and was ruled a passed ball. Jason Giambi stepped in
and he would ground out scoring the run. New York (AL) and Boston each
finished the night with 6 hits.
The win was credited to Mike Mussina(9-2) who went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing
2 runs. The losing pitcher was Beckett(4-4). He allowed 3 hits and 4 walks
in 6 innings.

Aaron Sele is on top of his game, only needing 102 pitches for the 4-hitter. All the Dodgers runs came on homeruns, with Matt Kemo hitting a 3-run blast in the 3rd, and Russell Martin with a 2-run shot in the 7th. The loss drops the Phillies out of first place, after enjoying 4 days on top of the division.

Aaron Sele went 9 strong innings and Matt Kemp connected with a 'big fly' and
had 3 RBI as the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5
to 0 at Dodger Stadium.
Sele(2-2) dominated Philadelphia hitters. He was stingy on the mound,
allowing just 4 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 5.96 to
4.41. Los Angeles(NL) had only 5 hits for the game.
Brett Myers(4-3) was the loser. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings.
'We didn't have a whole lot of chances today,' Charlie Manual said. 'Sele
just was too much for our guys.'

June 3, 2006 Tigers 10, Red Sox 9
A wild one at Comerica Park in one of the more entertaining games that I have had. Every starter for both teams except for Manny Ramirez had at least one hit and scored at least one run. The Tigers blew the game open (or so it seemed at the time) for a 9-2 lead in the bottom of the 6th with 6 runs, all with two outs. After Wakefield got two quick outs, he allowed a homerun and a single. Julian Tavares comes in, and can't retire a batter allowing a walk and four straight singles. Could have been 7 runs in the inning, but a runner was thrown out at home for the final out. The Red Sox come right back in the top of the 7th, getting 5 runs right back capped by a David Ortiz 3-run homerun to make it 9-7. Detroit got another run in the bottom of the 7th, and that would prove costly. Kevin Youkilis had a chance to be the hero in the 9th, as with 2 runs already in and runners at first and second with two out, he brought his 3 for 3 game to the plate but grounded out to end the game. 30 hits between the two teams, with highlights including Youk's 3 for 4 with a run scored, Trot 3 for 5 scoring a run, Coco Crisp with a homer and Big Papi's 3 run homer. Michael Thames 3 for 5 with 2 homers and Placido Polanco going 5 for 5 were the Tigers stars.

Designated hitter Marcus Thames slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the
Detroit Tigers outscored the Boston Red Sox 10 to 9.
Thames had a good evening at the plate. He cracked a two-run shot in the 2nd
inning, doubled in the 4th inning and delivered a solo blast (his 8th of the
season) in the 6th inning. Boston threatened in the 9th but their rally came
up short.
Jeremy Bonderman(5-4) allowed 5 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory.
Joel Zumaya earned the save, his 2nd. Tim Wakefield(5-4) was the losing
pitcher. He allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
Despite losing Terry Francona was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over
this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one
of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'
