Shane Victorino slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
topped the New York (NL) Mets by a score of 5 to 3 at Shea
Stadium.

Victorino enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He laced a base-knock in the 3rd
inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 5th inning and cracked a solo homerun
(his 4th of the season) in the 7th inning. New York (NL) was out-hit by
Philadelphia, 10 hits to 5.

Brett Myers(4-2) went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Myers
got help from Tom Gordon who was credited with his 7th save. Geremi
Gonzalez(1-2) ended up with the loss. He gave up 6 hits and 1 walk in 4 and
2/3 innings.

May 24, 2006 Phillies 10, Mets 2

The Phillies knock around Mets starter Alay Soler in his major league debut, as Sloer doesn't get out of the first inning allowing 5 runs and 3 walks. A big day for Ryan Howard and Sal Fasano's 3-run double help in the win, along with another solid start from Jon Lieber.

It is not often that a team can score 10 runs and still strike out 13 times, but the Phillies managed to do it. They either seem to miss the ball completely or slam it out of the park - lots of homers and strikeouts so far this season.

May 24, 2006 Yankees 5, Red Sox 4

The saga that is Matt "Vag" Clement continues. Since his first two lousy starts to the season, he has alternated between great and shitty. In starts 3 through 8, he allowed 0 runs in 7 1/3 innings, 5 runs in 5, 0 runs in 7, 7 runs in 5 1/3, 0 runs in 6, and 4 runs in 6 1/3. Since this start was after a lousy one, I thought hey maybe he will have a great start. No such luck, as the Yanks score 5 runs off him in 5 innings.

The Sox make a comeback in the 7th, scoring 4 runs thanks to a bases loaded single, two bases loaded walks and a sac fly, but then Mario Rivera came in in the 8th and that was it. Had the Sox won, they would have tied the Yanks for second, one game back of the first place Blue Jays. Instead, they sit in 3rd one behind the Yanks and 2 back of the Jays.

34,054 fans watched an exciting game at Fenway Park. The New York (AL)
Yankees topped the Boston Red Sox by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

New York (AL) took the lead off Matt Clement in the first inning plating an
isolated run utilizing 3 base hits. Melky Cabrera laced a one-base hit.
After an out was recorded, Gary Sheffield stepped in and he slapped a
base-hit scoring the run. New York (AL) finished with 11 hits while Boston
ended up with 6.

The victory went to Randy Johnson(2-4) who went 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2
runs. Mariano Rivera gained credit for his 12th save. Clement(2-5) was hit
with the loss.

May 23, 2006 Mets 2, Phillies 1

This has to be one of the most agonizing losses that I have ever had. Scoreless duel between Gavin Floyd and Steve Trachsel until the 6th, when Ryan Howard singles home a run. In the meantime, Floyd is smoking right along, only allowing a walk to David Wright. Wright was caught stealing, so Floyd had faced the minimum to that point.

With one out in the 7th and with Floyd facing the minimum 19 batters so far, Paul lo Duca breaks up the no-hitter with a solo homerun, which also tied the game. Floyd got the second out of the 7th, but then fell apart allowing a single and 2 walks to load the bases. Rheal Cormier comes in, and Sal Fasano (who at 3 for 4 was an asset with the bat for the game) mishandles a pitch for a passed ball which scores a run. 2-1 Mets. That would be the final, as after the Phillies get 2 men on in the 8th with one out, ex-Phillie Billy Wagner comes in and slams the door to get the save.

scoreless duel until the 6th inning.

Chad Bradford(1-1) allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Bradford got help from Billy Wagner who was credited with his 12th
save. The loss was charged to Gavin Floyd(2-3).

May 22, 2006 Tigers 19, Royals 13

I had to put this one in, as I almost couldn't believe the score myself when I saw it. Only the Kansas City Royals could lead a game 8-2 after 5 innings and end up allowing 19 runs for the game and lose! Well, maybe the Nationals could too, but it hasn't happened yet. LOL

WEB GEMS- Top 4th: Kansas City turns a triple play!

Catcher Ivan Rodriguez slammed a homerun and had 5 RBI at Kauffman Stadium
where the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 19 to 13.

Rodriguez was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine
day at their team's expense. He laced a one-base hit in the 6th inning, lost
the ball over the fence for three runs (his 8th of the season) in the 6th
inning and doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 7th inning. Detroit
bats were very productive in the 6th inning which saw them plate 9 runs on 8
hits and the 7th inning when they had 6 runs on 6 hits. Due to a poorly
pitched ballgame, scoring in 7 different innings was still not enough for
Kansas City to come away with the victory.

The win was credited to Jason Grilli(1-2) who went 2/3 of an inning allowing 1
run. Elmer Dessens(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He pitched 1/3 of
an inning and surrendered 3 hits and no walks.

Rodriguez said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate
tonight. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can. A couple
pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'

May 22, 2006 Red Sox 9, Yankees 3

Curt Schilling continues to pitch fairly well, and ups his record to 6-1. The Sox survive a scare in the 8th, as after Keith Foulke had walked the bases loaded with 2 out, Paplebon comes in and gets Bernie Williams to pop out to end the inning. The Sox tack on 4 insurance runs in the 8th thanks to some shoddy Yankee defense, and Paplebon stays on for the 9th for save number 13.

Schilling so far on the season has given up only 3 walks in 67 innings of work!!

beat the New York (AL) Yankees 9 to 3.

New York (AL) never recovered after Boston took the lead in the 2nd inning
when they tallied 3 runs on 4 hits. The key at-bat was by Loretta who
elicited a roar from the hometown fans when he laced a base-knock which was
good for two runs. Overall Boston out-hit New York (AL) 13 to 8.

Curt Schilling(6-1) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Jonathan
Papelbon earned his 13th save. Chien-Ming Wang(8-2) ended up with the loss.
He allowed 8 hits and 4 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

The Phils bats run roughshod over Lenny DiNardo, as he only goes 3 innings. Carlos Ruiz had a big day, 3 for 4 with 2 homers. The Sox got 4 back when Cory Lidle started to tire in the 8th, but it was way too late.

I was about to blog the game, but our electricity went off when I was just about to hit the blog button. I had to go into the saved boxscores for it.

May 20, 2006 Red Sox 8, Phillies 7

Another wild one, as 10 homeruns were hit between the two teams. Almost 11, but you will see in the web gems that Victorino robbed Ortiz of a homerun in the 9th inning. Both starters, Josh Beckett and Brett Myers, had fairly low pitch counts despite the number of innings for each, but the long ball is what killed them as each allowed 4 homeruns.

The Phillies almost came back in the bottom of the 9th to tie it, but with 2 outs and runners on first and third Chase Utley grounded out to end the game. I will put the scoresheet in so you can follow all the action.

WEB GEMS- Top 9th: Shane Victorino robbed David Ortiz of a Homerun!

Manny Ramirez launched 2 homeruns at Citizen's Bank Park where the Boston Red
Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8 to 7.

The game was decided in the top of the 9th inning. Alex Gonzalez ripped a
base-knock. Doug Mirabelli stepped into the batter's box and he slapped a
one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Mark Loretta came up and he laced a
base-hit scoring the run. This was a game of many highs and lows for the
home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 6 times in all.

Rudy Seanez(3-1) allowed 1 run in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. Seanez
got relief help from Jonathan Papelbon who gained credit for his 12th save.
The loss was charged to Arthur Rhodes(0-2) in relief. He surrendered 5 hits
and no walks in 1 inning.

May 19, 2006 Red Sox 8, Phillies 6

Excellent opener in the annual Sox-Phils series. Offensive highlights a plenty, as Big Papi hits 2 homers (his 17 leads the league), Jason Varitek hits a 3-run bomb, and Bobby Abreu came a homerun away for hitting for the cycle, as he had a single, double and triple. Even Matt Clement went 2 for 3!!
