April 13, 2006 Blue Jays 9, Red Sox 4
| The first inning has not been kind to Red Sox or Phillie starters so far in 2006. After David Wells got smacked around in yesterday's game, Matt Clement fares no better today in his second start of the season than he did in his first. The Jays scored 4 runs right out of the gate, and added 3 more in the 2nd. He managed to go 4 innings, but his pitch count got too high with his 7 walks and had to go to the bullpen. Runners being thrown out at home trying to score and doubleplays at the worst times are killing the Sox so far this season. Two DP today, and another runner out at home. Two reasons for the more aggresive running so far - because they are falling behind big early and need to score runs, and usually if it is on a single the runner at first will advance to second and negate the double play chance. So far, it is not working well as the runner is either thrown out at home or I don't try it and the next batter hits into a DP. |
