April 23, 2006 Phillies 9, Marlins 7

5th straight win for the Phillies, as they have come along nicely since that 2-10 start to the year. The Marlins made it interesting in the 9th scoring 3 runs off Johan Santana, as Tom Gordon comes in to finally get his first save of the year. Old friend Hanley Ramirez had a good day for the Marlins, with 2 homers, 3 for 5 with 3 RBI.

Historically in my SOM, the Phillies have always started off slow. 2-10 this year, 6-12 last year, 15-30 in 2004, and something like 10-25 in 2003. They seem to always get hot and get over .500, making the playoffs every year but last year.

Abraham O. Nunez had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Florida Marlins by a score of 9 to 7 at Citizen's Bank
Park.

Philadelphia had 4 runs cross the plate in the 5th inning when they had 3 base
hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Nunez who made the home-town
crowd a happy bunch when he laced a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners.
Florida threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Brett Myers(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 7 innings. Myers
got relief help from Tom Gordon who gained credit for his 1st save. The
losing pitcher was Randy Messenger(1-1) in relief.

'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Joe Girardi said.
'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to take.'

April 20, 2006 Phillies 6, Nationals 5

I think I am going to like playing against the Nats. Not as much of a slaughter as the last two games, but still a win. Get out the broom!! Decent starts for both starters, Ryan Madson and Billy Traber, although neither one was involved in the decision.

The Nationals did score first, scoring 3 runs on singles by Soriano and Vidro in the top of the 4th. The Phillies get one back in the bottom of the 4th on singles by Abreu, Burrell and Bell. Phillies tie it at 3 in the bottom of the 5th on doubles by Lieberthal, Victarino and Rowand. In the bottom of the 7th, Felix Rodrigues walks Bell and Howard with the bases loaded to score two. 5-3, Phillies. The lead didn't last long, as singles in the top of the 8th by Church, Scneider, Marlon Anderson and Soriano give the Nats 2 and tie the game, 5-5. With two out in the bottom of the 9th and Chase Utley at second, Sal Fasano laces a base hit to score Utley and win the game for the Phils.

WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Royce Clayton robbed David Bell of a base hit.

Aaron Rowand had 2 base hits as the Philadelphia Phillies won a dandy at
Citizen's Bank Park over the Washington Nationals, 6 to 5.

Philadelphia won the game with a run in the 9th inning. Chase Utley laced a
one-base hit. David Bell next to the plate and he laid down a sacrifice
bunt. One out later, David Dellucci stepped up to the plate and he was
walked intentionally. Sal Fasano followed and he delivered a single giving
Philadelphia the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Overall
Philadelphia out-hit Washington 15 to 11.

Tom Gordon(1-1) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Mike
Stanton(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 3 hits in 1
and 2/3 innings.

April 19, 2006 Phillies 10, Nationals 3

Apparently the best remedy for a team on a long losing streak is to play the Washington Nationals. For the second straight game, the Phillies score in double digits, opening it up against Gary Majewski as you can see. Another surprisingly effective start for Gavin Floyd, considering how much of a chump he has been for me in the past and actually was last year. This time the bullpen doesn't choke, and Floyd gets his first win.

Eventful first inning, as in the top of the first Alfonso Soriano led off with a double, and Jose Vidro walked. Nick Johnson lines one to Chase Utley for one out, Utley steps on second to double off Soriano for two outs, and flips a throw to first just beating Vidro back to the bag to complete the triple play!! I believe that is the first triple play any of my SOM teams have had. I had one turned against the Red Sox last season, however.

In the bottom of the first after Abreu and Burrell walk, Utley talks with his bat. Smokes a double to center field with Abreu scoring easily. Burrell tries to score, and with Utley going to third the ball is thrown past home by Ryan Church allowing Utley to come in and score also.

April 18, 2006 Phillies 17, Nationals 8

The long awaited win finaly happened in a BIG way. The Nats outhit the Phillies 16-12 for the game, but thanks to 12 walks and a very untimely error the Phils end up victorious. Be sure to check out the pitching and batter lines, because these are some of the most unusual stats that I think I have had in one game. I will put the play account in so you can follow everything.

The Philadelphia Phillies ended a long winless drought and had very little
trouble at Citizen's Bank Park downing the Washington Nationals. The score
was 17 to 8.

It was a good day for Philadelphia thanks to Chase Utley. He bombed a two-run
dinger (his 2nd of the season) in the 5th inning and doubled plating two runs
in the 7th inning. Philadelphia bats were hot in the 6th inning plating 4
runs and the 7th inning which saw them plate 7 runs on 4 hits. Despite
scoring in 5 separate innings, Washington could not get the win.

Geoff Geary(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing 2
runs. Felix Rodriguez(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.

'After the stretch we have been through lately, this victory is especially
sweet' offered Charlie Manual. Now, we just have to make this the norm - not
the exception!'

April 18, 2006 Red Sox 11, Devil Rays 0

Sox get to .500 as Matt Clement lowers his ERA by about 8 runs, only allowing 3 hits in 7 1/3 for his first win of the season. Clement and Keith Foulke combine on the shutout. 3 runs in the 7th and 4 in the 8th turned a fairly close 4-0 game into a laugher. Only one error made by the Red Sox on the season so far - most impressive.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays endured an embarrassing pasting as a potent Boston
Red Sox lineup tallied 11 runs while Matt Clement(1-2), with relief help from
Keith Foulke, throttled Tampa Bay.

Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they scored 2
runs on 2 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Boston had 12
hits overall, while Tampa Bay had 3.

Casey Fossum(1-2) was charged with the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 5 hits in
5 and 2/3 innings.

April 17, 2006 Red Sox 3, Mariners 2 (11)

A thriller for the annual Patroits Day game at Fenway. David Ortiz is the difference, with a game tying homer in the 6th and a walk-off bomb in the 11th. Good start for Lenny DiNardo, as despite Richie Sexon's 2-run homer in the first, the Mariners would not score for the remainder of the game. No no-hitter for Gil Meche this time, unlike last season when he no-hit the Sox for the only no-hitter of the year.

Both teams wasted glorious chances in the late innings, as Seattle had the bases loaded with no outs in the 8th and failed to score, while the Sox had the bases loaded with no outs in the 8th and with two out in the 9th, and got zippo. Tons of LOB this game.

Designated hitter David Ortiz ripped 2 homeruns as the Boston Red Sox beat the
Seattle Mariners in 11 innings by a score of 3 to 2.

The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Finally, Boston pulled
the game out in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Ortiz delivered
a solo blast (his 7th of the season) resulting in a mighty exciting win for
Boston and the 23,410 home town fans in attendance. Boston won despite being
out-hit by Seattle 12 hits to 9.

The victory went to Rudy Seanez(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Rafael Soriano(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He pitched 2 and 1/3
innings allowing 3 hits and 3 walks.

April 16, 2006 Rockies 6, Phillies 3

This is getting sickening as unbelievably, it happens again. Phils lead 3-1, bottom of the 8th, runner on first, one out. Rheal Cormier comes into the game to face lefty Todd Helton, who had a home run earlier in the game for Colorado's lone run. Cormier walks Helton, and stays in for the next batter, Garrett Atkins. Atkins promptly smokes a 3-run homer to give the Rockies the lead, 4-3. Addting insult to injury, Brad Hawpe hits a 2-run shot off Julio Santana later in the inning. Phillies had 2 runners on in the 9th with Pat Burrell at the plate and a chance to tie, but he strikes out to end the game.

Phillies now own the worst record in baseball at 2-10, and get swept for the third series in a row (Dodgers, Braves and Rockies) for a 9 game losing streak. Oakland has the best record at 10-3.

Third baseman Garrett Atkins cracked a homer and had 3 RBI at Coors Field as
the Colorado Rockies beat the reeling Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 6
to 3.

Ramon Ramirez(1-0) was dominant in relief. No one was able to reach base in
his 1/3 of an inning. Colorado managed 10 in their victory.

Brian Fuentes was credited with his 3rd save. Rheal Cormier(0-1) was given
the loss in relief. He allowed 1 hit and 1 walk without retiring a batter.

April 15, 2006 Rockies 5, Phillies 4

Another agonizing bottom of the 9th loss. Everything has just died - the hitting, the pitching. Only the Phillies could have the bases empty with one out and a runner on first with two outs with a one run lead in the bottom of the 9th and lose the game. Tom Gordon did his best Calvin Schiraldi imitation and let a sure win go into the loss collumn, extending the losing streak to 8.

Jimmy Rollins, after that torrid 6 homer start to the year, is only 1 for 21 since. Again, the 1-4 hitters are basically silent, going 1 for 16 today and 1 for 29 for the last two games playing in Denver no less!!

Garrett Atkins had 2 base hits at Coors Field as the Colorado Rockies came
back dramatically to top the slumping Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 5
to 4.

Colorado had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs
on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Danny Ardoin started the attack as he
lined a one-base hit. Jamey Carroll struck out, unable to help the rally.
Eli Marrero then drew a walk. Miguel Ojeda was up next and he doubled making
Colorado the winners and sending the 31,258 fans home happy. A wild and
woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.

Tom Martin(2-2) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. Tom
Gordon(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'What a win!', Martin said.
'These are the kind of games that stand out in your mind at the end of a
season.'

April 15, 2006 Red Sox 5, Mariners 4

This game was nowhere near as close as the score seems. Tim Wakefield was in the groove throughout, only making one mistake - a first inning Jose Lopez homerun. Wake almost went the distance, but after allowing 2 hits with 2 out in the 9th, Mike Timlin comes in and almost singlehandedly blows the game. Adrian Beltre smashes a 3-run homer to put Seattle within 1, but Timlin got the final out and gets the undeserved save.

J. T Snow got the start at first and is the unsung hero for the game, going 3 for 4 and a big 2 run double in the first inning. 8th time in 11 games so far this season that the Sox have hit double digits in hits.

David Ortiz had 2 base hits as the Boston Red Sox defeated the floundering
Seattle Mariners by a score of 5 to 4 at Fenway Park.

Boston started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the
first as they scored 3 runs on 3 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided
by J.T. Snow who excited the crowd when he singled scoring two baserunners.
Seattle had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Tim Wakefield(1-1) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Mike
Timlin earned the save, his 2nd. Joel Pineiro(1-2) was the loser. By
surrending 3 runs in 2/3 of an inning his ERA jumped from 2.57 to 4.30.

April 14, 2006 Rockies 6, Phillies 3

I think that the box score summary describes best how the Phillies season has gone so far - struggling. Phils lose their 7th straight despite having plenty of chances. Bases loaded in the 4th and 5th with one out, no runs scored. Of course, when the 1-4 hitters in the lineup go 0 for 13 for the game, that sure as hell won't help.

April 13, 2006 Braves 7, Phillies 4 (11)

This game never even should have gone to extra innings. Gavin Floyd's second straight good start was ruined by Rheal Cormier and Sal Fasano. Floyd left the game with a 4-2 lead in the 7th with runners on 2nd and 3rd. On Cormier's first pitch, it rolls to the backstop for a wild pitch, scoring a run. The second pitch is mishandled for a passed ball by Fasano, scoring another run and tying the game.

In the top of the 11th, had a runner on first with 2 out. I debated whether to have pitcher Ryan Franklin hit anyway, or pinch hit. If there were no runners on, he would have batted. But, I elected to pinch-hit and no run scored. In the bottom of the 11th, I decided to give Geoff Geary another chance. He has always been a reliable guy, so maybe yesterday's game was a fluke. He promptly allows a double to Brian McCann, and intentionally walks Wilson Betemit to set up a possable DP with the pitcher due up. The Braves pinch hit with Brayan Pena, and he promptly blasts a 3-run homerun to win the game for Atlanta.

Braves sweep the series, and the Phillies lose their 6th straight.

At Turner Field the Atlanta Braves outscored the floundering Philadelphia
Phillies in 11 innings 7 to 4.

The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Atlanta came out on top
in the 11th inning. Brian McCann started the inning off right when he laced
a one-base hit, and an error was also committed. Wilson Betemit stepped up
to the plate and he was walked intentionally. Brayan Pena then clubbed a
three-run home run (his 1st of the season) making Atlanta the winners and
sending the 43,638 fans home happy. Atlanta won despite being out-hit by
Philadelphia 10 hits to 7.

Lance Cormier(1-0) went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory.
Geoff Geary(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and
1 walk without retiring a batter.
