September 12, 2006 Red Sox 9, Orioles 7
This game should never have been a save for Papelbon. Kason Gabbard pitches spectacular, only allowing 2 hits and no runs in 7 innings, while Orioles starter Daniel Cabrera sucks wind, with 8 walks and 2 run-scoring wild pitches for an 8-0 Sox lead. With an 8 run lead and the 8th inning coming up, it sems like a good time to let some guys pitch who don't get much action. The move almost backfires, as the Orioles get 6 runs in the 8th off Craig Hansen and Mike Burns, but Timlin and Paps come in and pretty much squelch the rally. With 18 games left, the Sox sit 13 back in the division and 12 back in the wild card. Playoff hopes are slim, but still there. Although, it will pretty much take a miracle.

September 10, 2006 Red Sox 7, Royals 3
Manny Ramirez with a solid day at the plate and some sloppy Royals fielding give the Sox the win to sweep the series. 5th straight win for the Red Sox, who tie their longest winning streak of the season. Manny was a terror today, going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, a homerun, and knocking in 4. Julian Tavarez goes 7 innings and gets a solid start with the exception of the 4th inning, when the Royals scored all three of their runs.

to 3 at Fenway Park.

provided by Manny Ramirez. He doubled in the 1st inning, bombed a two-run
dinger (his 37th of the season) in the 5th inning and doubled scoring two
baserunners in the 6th inning. Boston banged out 10 on the afternoon.
The win was credited to Julian Tavarez(6-3) who went 7 innings allowing 3
runs. Mark Redman(6-9) ended up with the loss. He was knocked around,
surrendering 5 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.

September 9, 2006 Marlins 4, Phillies 2
Three mistake pitches were the goat today, as three homeruns accounted for the Marlins scoring enabeling them to beat the Phils. Miguel Olivo's 2-run shot in the 4th gave the Marlins the lead 2-1, and Wes Helms with a pinch-hit homer in the 7th made it 3-1. The Phillies get a run in the 8th on a Victorino triple, but Mike Jacobs gives the Marlins the two-run cushion back with a solo shot in the bottom of the 8th to make 4-2 the final.

In a good matchup it was the Florida Marlins 4, the Philadelphia Phillies 2 at
Dolphins Stadium.
Florida scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. The crucial at-bat was
provided by Miguel Olivo who made the Florida fans a happy lot when he lifted
one out of the park for a two run home run (his 9th of the season). Florida
out-hit Philadelphia for the game, 8 hits to 4.
The winning pitcher was Randy Messenger(4-6) who allowed no runs in 2 and 2/3
innings. Messenger got relief help from Joe Borowski who gained credit for
his 36th save. Brett Myers(11-6) took the loss.
With this win, Florida has a 64-78 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With
this loss, Philadelphia has a 3-7 record of late, 81-61 overall.

September 9, 2006 Red Sox 4, Royals 3
Another 3-0 Royals lead turns into a Sox victory. All the scoring today came in the first two innings. KC got 3 runs in the first inning on Mike Sweeney's 3-run homer, but the Sox come right back with 3 of their own in the bottom of the first. Coco Crisp doubled, and scores on a single by Alex Gonzalez. Papi and Manny strike out for two outs, then with Youk at the plate he grounds what should be the third out to first baseman Ryan Shealy. Shealy muffs it to put runners on first and second. The error would prove costly to the Royals, as next batter Trot Nixon rips a double to score both Gonzalez and Youk to tie the game. In the Sox second, after Crisp and Gonzalez again get back to back hits (two singles this time), Papi's sac fly scores Crisp from third for the 4-3 Sox lead. That would prove to be the final, as neither team would score again.

Coco Crisp had 2 base hits as the Boston Red Sox beat the slumping Kansas City
Royals by a score of 4 to 3.
Kansas City never recovered after Boston took the lead in the bottom of the
2nd inning plating an isolated run on 2 hits. That scoring would be all that
was needed. After the 2nd inning, neither team was able to score.
The victory went to Josh Beckett(10-12) who went 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing 3
runs. Jonathan Papelbon was credited with his 33rd save. Luke Hudson(2-4)
absorbed the loss.

September 8, 2006 Phillies 5, Marlins 4 (10)
Ryan Howard goes 3 for 5 with 4 RBI, falling a double shy of the cycle and is singlehandedly responsible for tying the game and winning the game for the Phillies. In the 6th down 3-0, Howard knocks a run home via a single for the first Phillie run. He slams a 2-run homer in the 8th to tie the game at 3, and after Shane Victorino's RBI single, Howard triples to send Vic home for the 5-3 Phillie lead. The Marlins do get a run in the 10th off Gordon (who gets the win as he came into the game in the 9th with the score tied), but the game ends with the tying run stranded at second. Because of that run, Howard's triple scored what proved to be the winning run. The Phils get back on the winning track, snapping their 4 game losing streak and hold a 4 1/2 game lead over the Mets and Braves in the division.

slapped a single resulting in a run. After another out, Howard came up and
he tripled scoring the final run of the inning. Philadelphia rapped out 8
hits for the night.
The victory went to Tom Gordon(4-4) who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1

September 8, 2006 Red Sox 14, Royals 6
If there is ever a way to try to get some much-needed wins late in the season, playing the 40 games below .500 Kansas City Royals would be it. What started out as a quick 3-0 Royals lead turned into a 14-6 laugher. A 6 run 3rd, a 3 run 6th and a 3 run 7th does most of the damage for the Sox. Jason Varitek falls a double shy of the cycle with a 3 for 4, 4 RBI day, Wily Mo Pena gets 2 doubles, and Coco Crisp scores 3 and knocks in 3 for just some of the highlights. Kevin Jarvis gets the win despite a lackluster start. The Sox get back to .500, but still more than 10 games back in both the division and the wild card.

Jason Varitek hit a homerun and had 4 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated the
Kansas City Royals by a score of 14 to 6 at Fenway Park.
Varitek had a good evening at the plate. He banged out a single in the 2nd
inning, tripled scoring two baserunners in the 6th inning and cracked a solo
homerun (his 12th of the season) in the 8th inning. For the game Boston
out-hit Kansas City 16 to 12.
Kevin Jarvis(4-4) allowed 5 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. The losing pitcher was Odalis Perez(6-6). He got hit hard, allowing
7 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.
Boston now has a record of 70-71. Still in a bad slump, with this loss,
Kansas City is 2-8 lately and 51-91, worst in the division on the year.
September 7, 2006 Marlins 9, Phillies 6
A wild beginning and an interesting end to this one. Four runs scored in the Phillie first inning on a David Dellucci bases-loaded triple and a Chris Coste single, but the Marlins get the 4 runs right back in the bottom of the first with a Miguel Cabrera RBI triple, Matt Jacobs RBI single and Joe Borchard's 2-run homer. Another run scored in the Phillie second on a wild pitch for a 5-4 Phillie lead after only an inning and a half. The lead would not hold however, as the Marlins get 3 in the 4th with the big blow an Alfonzo Amazaga 2-run homer for the 7-5 lead. Florida would score single runs in the 6th and 7th to up the lead to 9-5. Then it gets interesting. In the Phillie 8th, after two leadoff singles and a bunt for runners on second and third with one out, no runs score with two groundouts (the first one to the third baseman so the runners had to hold) ending the inning. In the Phillies 9th, four walks by Joe Borowski to Victorino, Howard, Burrell and Dellucci (who had a 3 for 4, 4 RBI day) score a run and leave the bases loaded with one out, as Chase Utley's strikeout was sandwiched in betwen the walks. Chris Coste and his .375 average comes to the plate, but Coste grounds into a game-ending double play and gives the Marlins the victory.

Joe Borchard lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI at Dolphins
Stadium as the Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of
9 to 6.
Florida jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 4th inning scoring 3
runners on 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Alfredo Amezaga who
excited the crowd when he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 3rd of
the season). Florida had 12 hits for the night while Philadelphia had 9.
Josh Johnson(5-8) went 6 innings allowing 5 runs for the victory. Joe Borowski
earned the save, his 35th. Jon Lieber(8-8) absorbed the loss. He was
knocked around, surrendering 7 runs in 5 innings.
